A Bertsolaritza workshop will start off Iberian Week at the University of Liverpool today

The University of Liverpool's Iberian Week is an annual event The University of Liverpool will celebrate this year’s Iberian Week today through Friday; the event examines various aspects of Basque, Catalan and Galician culture. The focus of the first day will be on Bertsolarism (Basque oral improvised poetry) with the showing of the documentary “Bertsolari” and a workshop by Itxaso Paya. On Wednesday, Juan Arana Cobos, Basque language and culture lecturer in Liverpool, will give a talk on the transition of Spain, and on Thursday, Gorka Mercero will review contemporary Basque fiction.

Korrika came to Boise: “Why do we speak Euskara? Because it’s fun!”

Boise Korrikalariak (Korrika runners) in front of the Euskal Etxea before the race (photo BoisekoIkastola) Korrika 18 arrived in Boise last Saturday, thanks to several local euskaltzales that organize the event called the “Fun Run.” The race gathered parents and children of the Boiseko Ikastola, Basque students and their professors and several other folks from Boise ready to run a little in support of the Basque language. Among them was historian John Bieter, a very well-known member of the local Basque community. Bieter highlighted that as a “euskaldunberri”, Euskera was the key for him to get to know the Basque culture as well as to create an entire network of relationships that he enjoys. “Let’s enjoy Euskara!” was the cry that started the race.

Classes at the Euskaltegi in Buenos Aires begin today with classes in the morning and afternoon

Teaching Basque since 1944 Summer break is over and institutions dedicated to instruction are returning to their activities, including the Euskaltzaleak Basque School whose classes will begin again today in Buenos Aires. Housed on Bernardo de Irigoyen Street, Euskaltzaleak will once again offer plenty of options for those wishing to learn the Basque language. Basque isn’t all they teach; the euskaltegi also provides workshops on singing, music and Basque dance.

A workshop on Basque Rituals this weekend in Boise as part of the Basque cultural workshops offered by BSU

Historian Dr. John Ysursa will teach a workhsop this weekend on Basque Rituals as part of the offerings at Boise State (photo EuskalKultura.com) “Annual Rituals that Define Basques” is the title of this weekend’s workshop that BSU offers as part of a Basque Culture Series. The sessions will take place on Saturday and Sunday, and will be taught by historian Dr. John Ysursa. The Basque Studies Minor at BSU offers a series of interesting workshops throughout the year on Basque culture. Last week’s workshop on “Women in Basque Culture,” was taught by Dr. Lisa Corcostegui and the next one will feature Jacob Singer, whose topic is “Basque Stories: Fact or Fiction.”

This year, the meeting of experts in Basque Diaspora and exile will focus on the return of Basque emigrants and its impact on society. What was left of the homes of returned emigrants and exiles? How were they received? What contributions, tangible or intangible, did they make to the country? What effect did they have on the household or local economies? International experts will try to answer these and more questions.

The Pello Mari Otaño written verse contest is underway with a category dedicated to the Diaspora

A bust of Pello Mari Otaño on a photo of Zizurkil The Hernandorena Cultural Association in Zizurkil has opened the “First Pello Mari Otaño written verse (bertso) contest,” in memory of the great Gipuzkoan bertsolari. Additionally, as a nod to the years Otaño spent in Argentina, the contest has devoted a category exclusively to Basques in the Diaspora. It also includes an adult and a youth category. Winners will be awarded 250 and 500 Euros.

The fuse has been lit, and next weekend the race will also arrive in many other places in the Diaspora like Buenos Aires, Madrid, Barcelona, Toulouse, Montevideo, Belfast, Brno, Geneva…and many more.

Denak Basque Basque club dancers during the last dance of the event (photo EuskalKultura.com) For the seventh year in a row nearly 100 youth from Basque clubs in the region will gather in Cañuelas to celebrate Aberri Eguna in the province of Buenos Aires. This will take place on April 6th & 7th and the program of events, familiar to those who have been participating since 2007, is as follows: reception for delegations on Saturday morning, open-air dance performances in the afternoon and farewell on Sunday at noon. In regards to the voucher, it is $320 for dancers and dance group directors and $350 for companions. For more information contact the Basque club.

Irudimena ('Imagination') contest poster The Basque Cultural Institute (EKE) and the Azkue Foundation have opened the call for the third edition of “Irudimena,” aimed at boosting artistic creativity in the Basque Country and the Diaspora. The proposed challenge is to choose a sound, and based on that sound, create a new one, a text or an image. The deadline to enter is May 15th. Prizes are gift checks that can be used at the FNAC (online outlet for books, records, and technology). The first three places will win 100, 200 and 300 Euros, respectively.

This time Muguruza is counting on the support of Kontrakantxa, a band made up of eight loyal music contributors that he has worked with throughout his 30-year career on stage.
