As every year, Basque clubs around the world are preparing to celebrate Aberri Eguna. In many of the euskal etxeak celebration of the Day of the Basque Homeland will take place on Sunday March 31, although in some cases, especially in Argentina and Chile it is pushed back a week due to vacations. In others, as in Necochea, celebrations begin this Friday.

Jesus Mari Alegria, writer from Araba and author of the book 'Araia, recuerdos e historias a contratiempo' is now conducting research on emigrants that left the plains of Araba for America. Alegria is now seeking help from the Diaspora, and is asking Basques around the world who know of emigrants from Alava, particularly from Araia and Asparren, to please get in touch with him. Alegria will publish his research in a book of tribute to the workers and emigrants of the area.

Korrika 18 ended yesterday at its target, Baiona that was overflowing with thousands of euskaltzales from all over the Basque Country. In its final leg, during the weekend, the race in favor of the Basque language continued to gain support from the Diaspora reaching places like Berlin, San Francisco, Brno, Mexico, Valencia, Paris…More images and videos have come to us from several places that we will share with you here.

Elena Arzak, Basque chef from Donostia, will leave tomorrow for Brazil to lead a group of prestigious cooks as part of the “World Tour Culinary Connection” that has been organized by the Basque Culinary Center. During the visit to Brazil, Arzak and two other cooks – Rodrigo de la Calle and Andres Conde – will conduct several activities this Sunday and Monday in Sao Paulo. They will be hosted there by Chef Alex Atala, of the Dom Restaurant in Sao Paulo (the fourth best in the world according to Restaurant magazine).

Basques in Paris have a double-date with Basque this weekend thanks to the Eskual Etxea. The Basque club has organized a special event to celebrate Korrika 18, that will bring this race in favor of Euskera to the French capital. Basque will also be featured during a film event with the Basque shorts as part of Laburbira.

Sheriff Walt Longmire is one of the best-known detective characters currently in the US, where he is even featured in a TV series. Longmire was created by writer Craig Johnson, who is now researching his ninth book. Siruela Publishing has just published the second book of the series, A Death Without Company in Spanish where Longmire investigates the murder of a Basque-American Mari Baroja. “The Basques are part of the American West and it is my responsibility to portray this world with honesty,” Johnson told EuskalKultura.com.

Hendayan artist Christophe Pavia and the president of Euskaldunak Quebec Daraspe Adelaide, are the creaters of "Zortzi", a modern vision of the Basque carnivals and a aesthetics of joaldunak, the carnival´s participants. On March 7, the show was presented at the Rialto theater in Quebec and, as expected, left the audience amazed with the hairstyles Pavia created live in just a few minutes. From Québec, the work made the jump to New York, where Pavia gave a presentation at the headquarters of Eusko Etxea. New Yorkers, people of all kinds of aesthetics, couldn´t resist double-takes when exposed to the hairstyles of Pavia.

After the meeting of the Board of Directors on March 16, authorities and members of FEVA had a meeting with the new Delegate of Euskadi for Argentina-Mercosur, Sara Pagola Aizpiri. During the visit, Pagola was able to talk to representatives of various Basque clubs, in a “lively and informal chat” where among other things, cooperative activities were mentioned. The official presentation, however, will take place during her first tour of Basque clubs that will take place in April long with the Director of Basque Citizens and Communities Abroad, Asier Vallejo. The tour will also take them to Uruguay and Brazil.

Korrika 18 continues full blast through Euskal Herria, with more than half of its route completed, as well as through the world, where it has already passed through various countries. In Mexico, for example, Basque students at the UNAM ran in favor of Euskera through the Xochimilco Canals, while students at Shanghai’s Euskal Etxea organized a race in support of Korrika 18. In Montevideo, the Euskal Erria Basque club joined the race with a tour of the waterfront of the Uruguayan capital and in Santiago, Chile the korrikalaris finished a 7-kilometer race. Students from several Basque lectureship programs around the world have joined in on Korrika 18 through various activities. In the case of La Plata there are two events: “Korrika poteoa”, set for tomorrow at 20:00 at the Basque club, and another, “Korrika Txe”, set for Friday at 17:30 in the Moreno Plaza. In Poznan, Poland, teacher Amaia Dones has sent us photos and a report on the race that her students participated in through the center of the city. “On its way to the Basque Country, the race made a stop in Poznan,” she commented.
