American series "Longmire" seeking 100 extras Basques in the U.S. to shoot an episode in Santa Fe

"Longmire" airs on A&E The television series "Longmire," based on the fictional character of a sheriff created by writer Craig Johnson, has announced a casting call for one hundred Basques in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The goal is to shoot a scene that takes place in a Basque festival, so people featured will be singing, dancing and playing traditional Basque instruments. The scene will be shot on April 19th, Blas Uberuaga, president of the Santa Fe Basque Club, told us.

Two Basque films, Emak bakia baita and Miel de Naranjas, were honored at the Film Festival in Nantes, France

For another year, Basque film was featured at the Nantes Film Festival; this time with two films winning prizes. The first was full-length film ´Emak bakia baita´ by Oskar Alegria, which was awarded the Best Documentary. This film will debut tomorrow in Madrid. On the other hand, the film ´Miel de Naranjas´, by Imanol Uribe, won the People’s Choice Award. Participation of Basque film in the festival was supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute.

The parody “Euskalbollywood,” won the first-ever contest of Basque shorts for Basque students in Madrid

Contest winners with the judges (photo MadrilEE/HABE) The Euskal Etxea in Madrid was very happy with the results of its first contest of Basque short films for its Basque students. Not only was the response good, but the level of work presented was also notable. “The films were very well done, and the winner 'Euskalbollywood,' was also very funny,” Julio Elejalde, club president, explained to EuskalKultura.com. There were 10 films, plus one outside of the contest made by the children at the Euskera Txoko (that also received a prize).

Chile champion of Mercomus 2013, after a week of games, activities and great atmosphere in Lima

Muslaris and their companions from Chile who took first place in the Mercomus 2013 tournament (photo LimaEE) The Mercomus 2013 mus championship, organized by the Euskal Etxea in Lima, ended last Saturday after intense days of activities and competition. Chile´s team was the victor, comprised of Jorge and Lukas Oyarzun (father and son). Second place was taken by Argentina’s team Jose Luis Macchi and Rolando Biasco, while third place went to hosting team Jose Luis Lopez and Carlos Lombardi (champions of the 2012 edition held in Santiago, Chile).

The Gure Txoko Basque club in Valladolid launches BOGA, an online Euskera course

One example is the Basque classes at the club, supported by the very dedicated professor Sonia Hernandez. The latest course to be offered--that began on Friday--is BOGA online. This new offering has been added to the Basque classes for adults as well as for a group of children that are already having success at Gure Txoko.

The Gure Etorkia Basque Association in Chile celebrated Aberri Eguna with a lively party on San Cristobal hill

As usual, the association organized an ascent of the San Cristobal hill, which is adorned by the Eusko Enparantza. There, in the shade of a sapling from the Tree of Gernika, this group of Euskaltzales celebrated the Day of the Basque Homeland, in the company of the new Basque delegate of Euskadi in Chile and Peru, Rafael Kutz.

The Basque Government opens an office in Boise, dependent on the Delegation in New York

Miren Perez Eguireun in charge of Euskadi's office in Boise since April 1 (photo EuskalKultura.com) Starting April 1, the Basque Government has an office in Boise, Idaho manned by Miren Perez Egireun, originally from Bilbao, and under the direction of Basque Communities Abroad. Its opening is part of the agreement of cooperation signed by the State of Idaho with the Basque administration. “I would like to send warm greetings to all in Boise and to all the Basques in the west and tell them that the doors of the office are wide open; we await their ideas and proposals with anticipation,” Miren Perez Eguireun told EuskalKultura.com.

Twenty-four members of the Euskal Etxea in Valladolid will visit the Basque Country this weekend

Members of Gure Txoko in Valladolid during a prior trip to Euskal Herria (photo ValladolidEE) As every year, the Gure Txoko Basque club in Valladolid has again organized a new edition of its trip to Euskal Herria, a weekend excursion that will begin tomorrow. Twenty-four members of the club will visit Bergara, Zumarraga, Usurbil (where they will eat at a cider house), Orio and Aia where they will attend the Festival of Txakoli. Additionally, on May 11 and 12 the club will be the seat for the Mus Championships of Basque clubs in Spain.

Euzko Etxea of New York celebrated Aberri Eguna of its Centennial to the rhythm of Zanpantzar

But Aberri Eguna 2013, celebrated last Sunday, was a very special gathering for the New York club that is also celebrating its Centennial this year. The board of the directors of the oldest Basque club in the US invited the Zanpantzar from Berriozar in Navarre to this signature event, which was their first trip to the Big Apple.
