We have received news of an opportunity to work in the Basque Country that might be very interesting for youth from the Diaspora: a family in Gasteiz is looking for an au pair that knows English to take care of two kids starting in June. The job consists of picking up a six-year-old girl and her eight-year-old brother from the Ikastola during the school year, and taking care of them during the day in summer. The family speaks Basque and they would like someone who is interested in the Basque culture and language and they would help that person learn and practice Basque. The au pair would be treated as a member of the family, would have his/her own room, and would be compensated 70 Euros a week for expenses.

This year the circuit of Basque short films, Laburbira, organized by the Federation of Basque Language Associations, Topagunea, has reached its tenth edition. The traveling festival began yesterday in Erandio and will visit around twenty places in the Basque Country and in the Diaspora, through March 29th. This Friday, for example, it will be in London thanks to the London Basque society; while on March 23rd shorts will be shown at the Paris Euskal Etxea.

Last week Basque female poets Castillo Suarez, Leire Bilbao and Itxaro Borda gave several poetry readings in Dublin as part of the anthology Forked Tongues. This work includes Basque, Catalan and Galician poetry translated into to English. Basque contributors to the work are Castillo Suarez, Leire Bilbao and Itxaro Borda along with Miren Agur Meabe. Presentations by these creators gathered an audience that was very interested in literature and Basque culture.

The Provincial Government of Bizkaia in collaboration with Bilbao’s Chamber of Commerce will begin a trade mission today in Mexico City for four days with 47 Bizkaian SMEs (small and medium sized enterprise) and clusters of machine tools (AFM), Automotive (ACICAE) and environmental industries (Aclima) as well as the Port of Bilbao. The goal is to explore business opportunities that this country offers. In all, there are 94 companies in the delegation, including SMEs and those that are part of clusters.

Ricardo Basterra, President of FEVA, and the Dean of the College of Languages at the National University of Cordoba (UNC), Dr. Silvia Barei, signed an agreement last Friday that will allow Basque to become part of the languages offered at this Argentine University. “This now opens a new place not only for the diffusion of the language but also of the Basque culture in this academic environment oriented to young people,” said teachers Elba Mocoroa and Noe Fernandez to EuskalKultura.com.

Korrika 18 has started a video clip contest inviting Basques or friends of the Basques everywhere to participate. The videos can only last five minutes and must include this year’s edition’s song and motto that was composed by Esne Beltza. London’s Basque club has accepted the challenge and is calling all members and friends to record a parody through the streets of the city. Do you want to participate in the contest? Encourage your Basque club and go for it! You have until March 12th!

The Coronel Pringles Basque club, in the southwest of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina was the site of an exhibit organized by students of the Basque Conceptual Jewelry workshop in Laprida, with works created in 2012 under the direction of Professor Silvia Azpiazu. The show was complemented by a performance by the Eusko Alaia choir. The event was very successful and it should be noted that the local mayor, Carlos Oreste, was also in attendance.

Tomorrow, the International Film Festival will open its doors in Guadalajara and will run through March 9th. This is the largest and most important film festival in Mexico, and this year it will include a large Basque representation with three Basque films featured in the official section. They are Snow White by Pablo Berger, the documentary “What about Columbus,” by Lander Camarero and the short Hamaiketakoa by Telmo Esnal.
