Lima’s Euskal Etxea opened the 2013 Mercomus Championship yesterday where delegations from Basque clubs in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela will compete. Matches will be played during the week, which also includes a full program of cultural activities and tours of the city of Lima. Tonight, they will have a dinner at the Basque club where they are expecting a big member turnout.

The Etxepare Basque Institute wanted to encourage students at various Basque language and culture lectureships around the world to participate in Korrika 18, a race in favor of the Basque language. In this light, Etxepare organized a Korrika 18 video contest and has now published the winners: the Basque students at the National University of La Plata in Argentina. Their teacher is Idurre Lekuona. Zorionak to you all!

Even though it's a little more than two years away, Jaialdi 2015 organizers have started festival preparations for the event that gathers US Basques once every five years along with numerous friends from the Basque Country and the Diaspora. The 2015 edition will take place from July 28-August 2 in Boise, and the organizers are inviting Basque choirs, dance troupes and artists from anywhere interested in participating to present their proposals. It will be a unique opportunity to be submerged into the Basque-American atmosphere.

Haritz Aranburu, cultural director at the Rio Grande do Sul Basque club in the south of Brazil, recently visited Sao Paulo where he met with representatives of the Euskal Brasildar Etxea Basque club. Both entities discussed the possibility of working together on various projects, among which is hosting the Semana Basco Brasileira 2013 in Porto Alegre.

As in previous years, the Federation of Basque Entities of Argentina (FEVA) has published a message as part of next Sunday’s celebration, The Day of the Basque Homeland (Aberri Eguna). “This is a necessary day for all patriots, a day that, with festivities, music, dance, meetings, talks, Euskera, we can show who we are. We would like to wish everyone an Aberri Eguna of encounters, of strength in our convictions and with Ikurriñas giving faith to our identity,” says the document. On its behalf, Sortu has also sent an Aberri Eguna message to us that is especially directed to the Diaspora (video).

A large group of new students have come to the Mendoza Basque club in hopes of studying Basque. For these, and for others who started their journey long ago, Denak Bat provides a large course offering, taught by teachers who were trained as part of the Euskara Munduan Program. Weekly classes are free of charge and take place at the clubhouse. “The next challenge will be to get a group of children,” as explained to EuskalKultura.com from the club who also told us about a visit by Zuberoan writer Philippe Etchegoyhen.

Since March 20, “The Atxaga Universe,” has provided folks in Madrid the possibility of delving into the work of the best-known Basque writer who is also the most translated, Bernardo Atxaga. The program, organized as part of the 25 anniversary of the publication of his novel Obabakoak, tours the authors’ work through film, music, and theater and is being very well received.

Artist Sandra Estarrona, a Student of Fine Arts at the Public University of the Basque Country is now in Viña del Mar as an exchange student, creating a mural on the façade of the Euskal Etxea in Valparaiso, invited by the club. The youth, interviewed by Rubila Araya, talks about the first steps in a promising career dedicated to artistic expression and approaches and talks about the challenges of living in the city for a year, for her, initially so far away and unknown.

Korrika, the race in favor of the Basque language came to Geneva Switzerland for the first time thanks to a group of euskaltzales. These young Basques, who reside there, organized a complete program of activities that included film and bertsos as well as a party complete with “euskaraoke.” The events were also attended by bertsolari Amets Arzallus, who dedicated some beautiful bertsos fitting for the occasion to all the euskaltzales in the Diaspora.
