Basque-Argentinean cook and writer Marita Echave is touring Argentinean Basque clubs presenting her book “Basque Rural Cooking,” a volume on the Basque cuisine she inherited and practiced in the Basque atmosphere she knew while growing up in rural Argentina. She has already visited and presented the book in ten Basque clubs, but there are still clubhouses to visit and commitments to fulfill. On March 16, she presented it in Cordoba at an event organized by the Gerora Association. Also present were the group Baietz and the Txotx! Basque dancers.

Beñat Minondo was a very well-known person in the Diaspora, especially among people from Iparralde in the Basque clubs in Argentina and Uruguay, since he was the treasurer and an active member of the Euskal Argentina Association. He lived in Bidarrai, and at 57 years old was thinking about retiring soon. His sudden death was an unexpected blow for his family and friends. Numerous notes of condolence have come to our newsroom since Sunday, especially from Argentina. His services will take place on Wednesday in Eiheralarre, Lower Navarre.

Elko resident Anita Anacabe-Franzoia has a lot of experience showing the Basque Country to Americans who want to get to know the country, in a different way, beyond what they would get with typical tourist guides. Anacabe has guided various trips over the last several years, where she shares her knowledge and personal experience of the Basque Country with the travelers. She is a well-known and active member of the US Basque community, and as such was awarded NABO’s Bizi Emankorra award last year, in recognition of her work with Basque culture in the US. The website Dantzan.com was forced to close at the beginning of last year, due to cuts in its financial support due to the crisis. Thanks to a campaign driven by its readers and users, it managed to reopen a few months ago, very aware of its precarious situation. Now, given the need for stable sources of funding, the support group has launched a new campaign in which it seeks financial support from its readers. If you would like this website to continue being a virtual meeting point for dancers all over the world, join the campaign.

The “Fiesta del Ternero y Día de la Yerra” in Ayacucho enjoys a long tradition in the province of Buenos Aires. During the week, residents declare themselves in a state of “yerra” and symbolically open their gates to greet visitors. The festival has two objectives: the first is calf branding; and the other to exhibit the goods of local growers and artists. This year, on the 41st anniversary of the event, the local Basque club also held its traditional “Peña Vasca.” There were also street performances where Basque and Gaucho rhythms merged, thanks to the Basque club dancers.
