The program airs at 8:00 p.m. Basque Country time, and can be heard worldwide on the Internet. This month, presenters Benoit Etcheverry, Robert Acheritogaray and Adelaide Daraspe will interview Fr. Jean Pierre Cachenaut, Basque chaplain in the US for over 8 years, and Itziar Aguirre, renowned Basque-Argentinean chef in Rosario, Argentina.

Roberto Awa Nari, a Basque in the Amazon: “Kukama and Basque are very similar languages”

Roberto Awa Nari (in black) on a trip home last year Roberto Awa Nari is a member of the Kukama tribe in the Amazon in Peru. He arrived in the Basque Country six years ago to work on a film. His creativity has taken him in many directions: musician, actor, artisan, photographer…We got to know him thanks to his sending some of his images to EuskalKultura.com's photo contest, and the story of this native from the Amazon that speaks Basque sparked our curiosity. He tells us that he started to learn Basque in Peru, even unknowingly to memorize the lyrics of a song that was on a cassette give to him by a priest, “uh uh uh colore bisia, arrasa ke riaren contra...”

Landscapes, dances and a lot of emotion mark the 91st anniversary of Euskaldunak Denak Bat in Arrecifes

A toast by Juan Lucio Agotegaray (photoEE) The Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque club in Arrecifes celebrated its birthday on February 19th and started celebrating on that day with a dance exhibition a the Ricardo Gutierrez Club. However, the main festivities took place on Saturday, the 23rd, with the inauguration of the show “Costa Vizkaina” (Bizkaian Coast) and a screening of a documentary, in an event that offered various forms of entertainment, including karaoke and dance. Regular Basque club activities will begin the first week of March, and this year there is a new choir, directed by Martin Aguilar, a txistu workshop by Juan Ignacio Saes and Marianela Rimini.

The Basque Government has named Sara Pagola as the Delegate of Euskadi for Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay

Sara Pagola Aizpiri was the manager of the Balenciaga Museum Foundation (photo elgoibarren.net) The Council of the Government has approved the appointment of Sara Pagola Aizpiri as the Delegate of Euskadi for Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Pagola knows Argentina well since she lived and worked in Buenos Aires between 1997 and 1999, creating the Basque-Argentinean Institute for Food Quality. Her work experience began in the world of food and management. She was the General Director of the ELIKA Foundation for 8 years, and participated in implementation of the Balenciaga Museum as director of the Balenciaga Foundation from 2011-2012.

Etxepare and EKE publish a book online on Basque dance in Basque, French and English (in pdf)

Etxepare and EKE have now made a book on Basque dance available on-line (photo Asier Uriagereka) The collaboration between the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Basque Cultural Institute of Iparralde (EKE) has resulted in the translation into French of a book on Basque dance by expert Oiar Araolaza. The work was published by Etxepare last year in Basque, Spanish and English, and now thanks to the help of EKE it has been published in Basque, French and English. The book can be downloaded for free in pdf from both the EKE and Etxepare websites.

Irune Sanchez, kid's Basque teacher in Boise: “As my friends say, I’m another Basque-American”

Irune is originally from Berriz, Bizkaia and came to Idaho’s capital for the first time in 2008. Now, after having spent several years abroad, she returned this semester to teach at the Ikastola. The Venezuelan Association San Francisco Javier lends dental and pediatric aid in Paramo

Pediatrician Anton Arriaga with a family from Paramo (photo Aitor Azpiritxaga/Jazoera) We discovered this news through Jazoera, the newsletter from the Eusko Etxea in Caracas. The newsletter focuses on a solidarity-based initiative carried out by several Basque-Venezuelans at the heart of the San Francisco Javier Association. For another year, now in its 28th, the association has traveled to Paramo de Siete Lagunas (3,400 meters above sea level) to bring dental and pediatric aid to its residents. The initiative was born thanks to the residents of the area, who helped with the rescue of a crashed plane that killed students from the San Jose school, where the founder of the association, Jon San Juan Echevarrieta, studied.

EKE opens the call for grants up to 13,000 Euros for audiovisual material on Basque culture; open to the Diaspora

Hogei'ta cultural program poster Euskal Kultur Erakundea, the Basque Cultural Institute of Iparralde, has opened the call for a new creative grant as part of the Hogei’ta cultural program. These grants will support a project of reinterpretation of the Basque culture through image and sound up to 13,000 Euros as well as stays in Aquitaine and the Basque Country. The call is open to artists in the Diaspora as well as all over the word, according to EKE. Proposals should be sent in Basque, French, Spanish or English prior to April 30.

The show “Zortzi” will bring Basque carnivals to Quebec, with the participation of the Euskaldunak Basque club

"Zortzi" show poster Christophe Pavia from Hendaia and Adelaide Daraspe from Urruña are the creators of “Zortzi” a show that incorporates Basque carnivals with Pavia’s art that will debut in Montreal (Quebec) on March 7. The city of the presentation was chosen since the Quebec Basque club, Euskaldunak, also participates in the show as Daraspe is its president. The presentation-parade will take place at the Rialto, one of the main theaters in the city. After the show, Daraspe will give a talk on Basque carnival customs.
