The National Mus Tournament of Basque clubs in Spain will be celebrated in Valladolid this weekend in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Federation of Basque Clubs there. The organizing club is that of Valladolid as they were the champions of last year’s tournament. According to the club secretary, Jokin Oncalada, the event will be attended by delegations from the clubs in Barcelona, Valencia, Salou, Madrid, and Mallorca as well as that of the hosting club.

The Basque Cultural Institute in Iparralde (EKE), and the Azkue Foundation have opened the third edition of the “Irudimena” (imagination) contest aimed to support artistic creation in the Basque Country and the Diaspora. The deadline to enter is May 15, and so if you haven’t entered yet, you had better hurry up! The prized are gift cards in the amounts of 300, 200, and 100 Euros to spend on books, music, or technology from FNAC (on-line for those in the Diaspora).

The University of Birmingham will begin the third edition of the Basque, Catalan and Galician Film Festival tomorrow, organized by the lecturers teaching each of these languages at this English institution. The festival will begin with a Basque feature-length film Zorion Perfektua (Perfect Happiness) directed by Jabi Elortegi and based on the novel of the same name, written by Anjel Lertxundi. The director will attend the showing and will answer audience questions following the film.

The Etxepare Basque Institute published the call for grants to aid in the diffusion of visual arts, music and performing arts outside of the Basque Country for 2013. These grants are designed for Basque groups and artists and will cover travel costs and travel during the tour, as well as performances abroad. Through this article we are also proposing that any interested groups and Basque clubs use this page as a meeting point for possible performance opportunities in Basque clubs in the Diaspora. If you would like to perform at one of these clubs, or if you would like to invite a certain artist to your club, leave your proposal and email address in the text of our comments section.

Thanks to the Basque language and culture lectureship sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute in the city of Szeged, another edition of Basque Culture Week began last Saturday in Hungary. Music and dance were featured during the inauguration with a dance workshop where Basque and Hungarian music could both be heard. The events contintue through Friday in Szeged, where four Basque films will be shown: Snow White, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Gazta zati bat (A Piece of Cheese) and Kutxidazu bidea, Ixabel (Show me the way, Ixabel).

There are only a few days left before the end of the contest to design the new logo for the Euzkaldunak Basque club in Boise, Idaho. Anyone wishing to participate should do so before this Wednesday, May 8. All proposals should be sent via email to the club. The winner will receive $150 and will have the honor of seeing his/her work online, and on new publications of Boise’s Basque club.

It's here--the season for festivals and picnics of the euskal etxeak in the United States. The celebration begins this Saturday in Fresno, California, with the 36th edition of the Fresno Basque Basque Club. Over the next few months, every American Basque Center will throw its big party, on a calendar that runs until October. Among the events to mark this year, a few in particular to be noted are the Elko Festival, which takes place July 5-7 and will be held in conjunction with the NABO Convention and a meeting of the Basque centers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico; Udaleku, June 16-28 in Bakersfield, California; and Kantari Eguna, August 10 in Gardnerville, Nevada, and Centennial Gala Etxea Euzko New York on October 13.

The Project is underway and the workshop has already been held in three institutions: at the Eusko Kultur Etxea, the Centro Navarro in Buenos Aires and the Euskal Etxea in San Nicolas. In hopes of including as many people as possible, Valeria created a website that provides information as well as a way to get in touch with her. Prior musical knowledge is not required to participate in the workshop, and you don’t have to come with instruments either since everything needed is made available at each venue. Classes include txistu, txirula, alboka, silbote, pandero, txalaparta and atabala to name a few. Among the goals of the workshop is to train groups to eventually accompany dance groups.
