The Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno will begin this year’s International Symposium tomorrow, entitled, “Beyond Guernica and the Guggenheim: Relations between Art and Politics from a Comparative Perspective.” The three-day conference will bring experts together from different fields to discuss the relationship between art and politics in today’s society. The conference was co-organized by Adelina Moya and Jesus Arpal, the Center’s William Douglass Distinguished Scholars for this year, along with Center faculty member Zoe Bray.

The Director of the Etxepare Basque Institute, Aizpea Goenaga, is currently in Argentina along with Mari Jose Olaziregi, Director of the Promotion of Euskera on a short trip where they will meet with cultural agencies and with those responsible for the Basque lectureships there as well as in Chile. Yesterday, for example, they attended the International Book Fair in Buenos Aires, and met with representatives of the Juan de Garay Foundation and the Laurak Bat Basque club. Today they will attend a meeting with Basque students at the National University in La Plata and the La Plata Basque club.

With the first tour of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil completed, the Director for the Basque Community Abroad, Asier Vallejo, was very satisfied with the visits and contacts made during his stay, in regards to the various Basque clubs as well as with the federations in these countries. The tour concluded last Saturday in Brazil, where Vallejo met with the local Basque clubs of Sao Paulo and the young center in Rio Grande do Sul. Prior, in Uruguay, he also met with Basque clubs there and was received by the mayor of Montevideo.

The festival Dni Baskijskie, or Basque Days in Poznan, took Basque culture to the streets of this Polish city last week from April 23-25. These cultural days were organized by the Basque language and culture lecturer at the Adam Mickiewicz University, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute, with great involvement from students, as always. The lecturer Amaia Dones Mendia highlighted that among the activities was a bertsolaritza workshop in Polis that was supported by various cultural centers in the city.

This Saturday and Sunday, anyone who would like to spend a weekend completely in Basque in the heart of Mallorca can do so thanks to the Euskal Etxea Artea, which has organized a barnetegi. The intensive course will focus on teaching the Basque language, but its goal is to give participants the possibility to live in Basque for 48 hours. The barnetegi will include activities in Basque, including Basque dance, txalaparta and gastronomy classes.

The Basque club in Lima postponed its annual Aberri Eguna celebration this year until last Sunday the 21st, due to hosting the South American Basque club Mus Tournament the week before. The festivities began with mass, celebrated by Monsignor Irizar, and a recital by the choir. The day ended with a lively meal at the Basque clubhouse.

In November, Juan Mari Beltran will begin a tour of Belgium that will include nearly 30 concerts, thanks to the collaboration of the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Association Jeunesses Musicales. This is a very prestigious organization that directs a broad musical program in public auditoriums and schools throughout the country annually. Beltran was the musician chosen for this year’s tour, which will provide 20 concerts in schools and another dozen in public auditoriums.

Educator and writer Arantxa Ugartetxea has a close relationship with the Basque Diaspora in Brazil, where she lived for 8 years in the 80s. It was then that she got to know the Atletico Paulistano Club, formed by a group of Basque pilota fans. The passion of these Brazilian pilotaris for Cesta Punta inspired Arantxa to write a novel that invokes the adventures and the incredible stories that they told in Brazil. “They love the spectacle of Cesta Punta and the sound of the ball against the wall, or when it hits the cesta,” recalls the author.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu hosted a reception yesterday in Brussels for the local Basque community as part of his first trip “to the heart of Europe” since taking office. Attending the event were Basque politicians and technicians that work in European Institutions, as well as members of the Bruselako Euskal Etxea. During the first day of his visit, Urkullu met with the President of the European Commission, Durao Barroso, as well as other authorities; today his visit will conclude with a meeting with Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council.
