The Paraguayan Academy of History will host the presentation of the book The Garays in the Paraguayan Culture by Raul Amaral, at an event sponsored by the local Basque club of Asunción, a city that was founded in 1541 by Basque Domingo Martinez de Irala (Bergara, 1509 – Asuncion, 1556). From the Paraguayan Basque club, its board of directors, led by Hector Izaguirre, invites members and anyone else interested in the topic to attend.

The English version of Linguae Vasconum Primitiae first work published in Euskera in 1545, by Bernard Etxepare from Behe Nafarroa, was published by the Provincial Government of Bizkaia in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno with an introduction by Beñat Oyharcabal and prologue by Pello Salaburu.

The drawing for five DVDs on the great poet of the Diaspora Jose Mendiague took place and now we are letting you know the names of the winners. The DVDs of this pastoral written by Jean Bordaxarre, performed last summer in Arrokiaga (Zuberoa) and recorded by our friends of Aldudarrak Bideo will travel to Argentina (3), Italy (1) and Euskal Herria (1). The University of California-Santa Barbara will offer a series of lectures on Basque Studies as part of the Comparative Iberian Studies Symposium being held tomorrow and the next day. Director of Euskera at the Etxepare Basque Institute, Mari Jose Olaziregi, will give a talk entitled, “Iberian Studies Within/Beyond the Peninsula: The Current Situation and Desiderata,” followed by a panel dedicated exclusively to Basque studies including presentations by academics and experts such as Diana Palenzuela, Begoña Echeverria and Unai Nafarrate.

Julitxu Gysling Zubillaga, born in Necochea and resident for 21 years in Euskal Herria, is the president of the Federation of Choirs of Gipuzkoa since April 27. Julitxu’s life has always been united to music, as she started singing in choirs directed by her grandfather, musician, Hipolito Zubillaga, at the age of five. Her grandfather, one of the founders of the Necochea Basque club was an important influence in her life, both in her love for music as well as for the Basque culture. This connection made her feel at home in Euskal Herria, the land that has given her “two children, friends, and every kind of experience, lessons and MUSIC capitalized.”

A delegation of the Basque Government, headed by Asier Vallejo Itsaso, Director of the Basque Community Abroad, is in Dublin to participate in the European section of the Global Forum of the Diaspora. The conference, which will take place today and tomorrow, strives to be the meeting point where “diaspora communities can forge relationships in the private sector, civil society and public institutions to make their relationships with the country of origin more effective and sustainable.

Following tradition, Gral. Acha celebrated its Provincial Festival of the Calf 2013, organized by the local Euzko Txokoa Basque club. In this, its 41st edition, the Basque community included the good work done by a delegation of Macachin Euzko Alkartasuna to their presentation on Basque culture. Dancers from Euzko Alkartasuna performed as part of the inauguration of the festival and shared the rest of the day with those in attendance. “Our next step will be to travel to Macachin and return the visit” hosting club president, Osvaldo Videla told EuskalKultura.com.

The Basque lecturer in the city of Szeged, in Hungary, celebrated Basque Cultural Week 2013 from May 4-10, with activities in Budapest and Szeged. The program included music and Basque dance in the first part, with two very successful dance workshops where the Hungarians jumped into dance, showing much enthusiasm and having a great time. Afterwards, there was a Basque film festival at the University of Szeged that allowed students to enjoy four recent Basque films that were very well received.

Denak Bat in Mar del Plata invites you to the Ex-Dantzari Festival that will take place on June 8-9. The Euskal Etxea is organizing the event and recently announced some of the details. Groups of former dantzariak (Basque dancers) can take part. They are suggesting that each delegation (from Basque clubs all over Argentina) perform one dance. Furthermore, if one club doesn’t have enough dancers to participate, they are also suggesting that clubs unite as part of the festival. Denak Bat also reports that the amount of the voucher is 350 pesos (Saturday meals, lodging and breakfast) and the deadline to reserve is May 31.

The last few weeks have been successful for the world of poetry in Basque, which has been able to be heard in places as disparate as Brno, in the Czech Republic, and New York. First, in Brno, the Basque language and culture lecturer there organized a multi-lingual recital entitled, “Chansons d’amour, ilargi beterik gabeko gauak” (Love songs, nights without a full-moon). Secondly, the poet Tere Irastortza took several of her poems to the literary festival PEN World Voices Festival in New York.
