Manhattan will celebrate the third ever Txakoli Fair, Txikifest 2013, this Sunday

Many New Yorkers gathered at last year's Txikifest where they enjoyed the party and the great atmosphere (photoTxikifest.com) New Yorkers have surrendered to Txakoli thanks to the good work done by Basque restaurateurs and chefs in the Big Apple that have publicized this typical Basque white wine. In this regard, the owners of Txikito, Eder Montero from Bilbao and Alex Raij, stand out for their first organizing Txikifest, the Txakoli Fair three years ago. The event will take place this Sunday, the third year in a row that will stop traffic dedicating an entire street to this Basque event.

The countdown is over: today a group of members from four Argentinean Basque clubs leaves for the Basque Country

18 of the 22 participants who gathered on May 4th at the Arrecifes Basque Club to share a meal full of emotion and excitement (photoEE) The idea was born in the middle of last year in the heart of the Arrecifes Basque club and spread to other surrounding Basque clubs and filled up in just a few days. Since then, all that was left was to wait. Twenty-two Argentineans from clubs in Arrecifes, San Pedro, Suipacha and Buenos Aires (Euskaltzaleak) leave today form the Ezeiza Airport for a 14-day trip to Euskal Herria, visting places like Gernika, Gaztelugatxe, Aralar, Biarritz, Donostia, Bilbo, Gasteiz, Iruña...Today at 12:10 the adventure begins. Bidaia on, have a great trip!

Even the weather feels like Basque in Bakersfield: Kern County Basque Club's 41st Festival

Dancers at the Bakersfield Basque Festival 2013 (photo Eneko Egiluz Beramendi) News from homeland show that the winter is not leaving and that spring will wither even before having blossomed. The weather is always a topic to talk about for Basques. And this weekend, in Bakersfield (CA) has been the same way, but for a very good reason! The Kern County Basque Club celebrated its 41st annual Basque Besta in this arid and semi-desert region from the 24th to the 27th of May. Nonetheless, temperatures have welcomed assistants with less than 85ºF and a refreshing breeze. It could be said that even the weather made a friendly gesture to the Basque community of the area.

Jose Mujica, President of Uruguay will meet tomorrow with the Lehendakari and visit Euskal Herria

Euskal Erria Basque club president, Agurtzane Aguado, presenting President Jose Mujica with a makila naming him an honorary member of the club (photo EuskalErriaEE) President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, will be in the Basque Country this weekend as part of a tight two-week international tour which will include stops in Chine, Spain and Italy. Tomorrow afternoon he will be received by Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu in Vitoria-Gasteiz and the day after he will travel to the Vatican where he will meet with Pope Francis. In the afternoon, he will return to Euskadi to visit the Bizkaian town of Muxika where his father’s family originates. They immigrated to Uruguay in the middle of the 19th century. On Sunday, he will visit the Mondragon Cooperative.

The first recording of Gernikako Arbola, that is turning 100 years old, played again in Berlin

Inaxio Lopez de Arana showing the sheet music from the recording during his talk in Berlin (photo BerlinEE) Thanks to Berlin’s Euskal Etxea, the translator and researcher Inaxio Lopez de Arana gave several talks throughout the week in Germany, on recordings done in 1913 in Euskal Herria by Austrian ethnologist, Rudolf Trebitsch. Among these was the first recording of the song Gernikako Arbola that could be heard this week in Germany, thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Gernika Euskal Etxea in Berlin. The first talk took place in the German capital, followed by another at the University of Leipzig, organized by the Basque language and culture lecturer there.

The San Antonio Choir from Bilbao is looking for support to sing at the New York’s Basque club centennial

The San Antonio Choir into the Richard Serra sculpture at the Guggenheim Bilbao The San Antonio de Iralabarri choir has begun a very exciting Project for all of its members: perform in New York during the Euskal Etxea’s Centennial events. This would take place from October 11-14, and the group has started a campaign to help finance the trip.

Successful FEVA Txistu workshop with plans for another: in September just before the Argentinean Basque Week

Txistularis from various clubs attended the workshop (photoEE) Txistus from various Argentinean Basque clubs could be heard at the first Txistu Workshop of 2013 organized by FEVA. Classes took place at the Basque club in Arrecifes and gathered representatives from 8 different euskal etxeas. The success of the day encouraged organizers to consider another workshop closer to the National Basque Week that will take place this year in Villa Maria. During the weekend the first Txistulari meeting “Potxolo Loyola,” took place as well as a meeting of FEVA’s board.

The 9th EHMG Seminar will discuss the return of migrants and Basque Exiles on June 18 and 19 in Bilbao

Conference poster The University of Deusto will be the site on June 18 and 19 of the 9th Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi (EHMG) conference entitled, “Reflections on Return Migration and the Basque Exiles.” The event was organized by a scientific committee comprised by experts Pedro J. Oiarzabal, Oscar Alvarez Gila, and Jon Ander Ramos. It will also be attended by the Director of Basque Communities Abroad, Asier Vallejo. Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com, is also among the presenters and will talk about the Centennial of New York’s Basque club, the first in the US.
