Valladolid’s Basque club was the site for the 2013 Basque Club Mus Tournament of Spain that was held on May 11 and 12. Tournament winners were from Catalonia, from Barcelona’s club, Norberto Rodriguez and Andres Fernandez who will now advance to the World Championships of Basque Collectivities Tournament that will be held in Chile. The annual meeting of the Federation of Basque Clubs of Spain was held in conjunction with the tournament where issues of subsidy cuts and upcoming activities were addressed.

One of the main objectives of the Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina-Mercosur, Sara Pagola, is to get to know all of the Basque clubs of the area. In May her tour began with a visit to Toki Eder in Jose C. Paz, where she not only presented the goals of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Basque government but also participated in the inauguration of the exhibit “Bombing of Gernika – 75th Anniversary,” as well as in the commemoration of Aberri Eguna. The event brought a large number of the public that included authorities and representatives of local institutions.

The documentary Emak bakia directed by Oskar Alegria, is enjoying a successful international tour. The most recent showings took place in California: first, as part of the San Francisco International Film Festival; and later at the Basque Cultural Center sponsored by the local Basque Educational Organization. The documentary tells the story of the search for a mysterious house in Lapurdi and the director was thrilled by so many Basques from Iparralde attending the BCC showing.

“Member’s Day” was established by the Etxe Alai Basque club to honor those who carry out the day to day club business to keep it going. The initiative was successful and a large group joined the honorees at the celebrations in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, they are hoping for good a crowd at the event that will be held on June 9 at noon at the clubhouse. Along with this announcement Etxe Alai also told EuskalKultura.com that the club now has a Facebook page as well.

The University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB) held a Symposium on Iberian Studies last week that dedicated a section to Basque topics. The event was attended by Mari Jose Olaziregi from the Etxepare Basque Institute that gave a talk on the situation of Iberian Studies. Accompanying her were experts Unai Nafarrate and Diana Palenzuela (Basque language and culture lecturer at UCSB) who gave talks on Basque radio and the bilingual education in Euskadi.

The Basque Government’s Director of the Basque Communities in the Diaspora, Asier Vallejo, participated last week in the Global Diaspora Forum in Dublin, in the European section as part of an international initiative supported by the United States. At the gathering, Vallejo participated in meetings where the experiences of countries like Ireland and Scotland, who work with their US Diasporas to obtain investments and projects for their homelands, were studied. In 2009, a group formed mostly of members of Centro Navarro of the South in Mar del Plata, decided to form a dance group, “Sexta Merindad.” The decision was made as a response to requests that had been addressed to the board of directions, among which, and according to members of the new club, not allowing some youth to enter the clubhouse. Since then, each group took different paths, even though the “Navarrese Center of the South” was soon truncated: in 2009 their headquarters were sold. Due to this situation, members of “Sexta Merindad” decided to reestablish the Centro Navarro in Mar del Plata in order to continue to be able to continue spreading the culture of their ancestors in the area. They continue to do so and invite everyone to participate in San Fermin again this year. The event is scheduled for July 7th on the beach.

Hungarian anthropologist Mariann Vaczi recently defended her Ph.D. thesis, “Sport, Nation, Gender: Soccer Culture among the Basques” at the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her work is a study of Bilbao’s Athletic soccer team and its unique philosophy, a project whose research took Vaczi to Bilbao for a year and a half to conduct field work. “My first day in Bilbao was the day before the Copa final 2009; I was fascinated by the energy, the expectation and the enthusiasm in the city. When hundreds of thousands came out to greet the losing team, I realized that there was something fascinating there,” she explained to EuskalKultura.com.

As part of his international tour “No More Tour 2013,” Fermin Muguruza gave two concerts in Argentina. The Basque musician came to the Southern cone accompanied by the band Kontrakantxa who he performed with in the Vorterix Theater in Buenos Aires and in the Sala Astral in Cordoba. The concerts took place on May 16 and 17 and also included the local groups; in Buenos Aires, Malena D’Alesio and Todopoderoso Popular Marcial; and in Cordoba he played with the Basque-Argentinean group Baietz. In Cordoba, the leader of Negu Gorriak stressed that this town was “a center for resistance,” in Argentina.
