the Basque Government has announced that it will publish the call for the Gaztemundu 2013 program this Thursday, June 20th. This year the program will be dedicated to form musicians and music teachers for the Basque Centers. Gaztemundu is directed to young people, 18 and older (no age limit). The deadline for applications will be on July 21st, 2013.

The Cuban Basque Club, with a new board of directors since mid-2013, has begun a new Project, with basic goals like finding a clubhouse, and energizing its activities like its Basque language classes. Its president, Renato Garcia Egusquiza told EuskalKultura.com that other challenges include organizing cultural exchanges and recuperating historical sites on the island like the Jai Alai Fronton in downtown Havana.

Rio Cuarto’s Rotary club, in the Argentinean province of Cordoba, has recognized the Gure Ametza Basque club with the distinction “Recognizing Communities.” Using their imagination and in order to raise money for clubhouse renovations, Gure Ametza will prepare and serve a lot of paella to go on Sunday for $60 each. This is a very popular event so organizers are encouraging buying your tickets in advance.

The Basque lecturer at the Goethe University in Frankfurt has carried out numerous activities throughout the school year, and during the month of June has planned the grand finale, a Basque film festival that will run throughout the month. In addition the first Literature Contest in Basque in Germany has also been planned which is aimed at local residents. The deadline to submit texts is June 28.

The Quilmes Basque community is on the move. Its representatives have proposed obtaining legal status and call Basque descendants in the area to become active again. The board of directors has organized its First Basque Day on Friday, June 14 in the city with a program that includes talks on Basque topics organized by Eduardo Erdozain and Luis Luquez. This event will be followed by new talks in July.

For another year, Txakoli flowed through New York, thanks to Txikifest, a fair organized by the owners of the Txikito Restaurant – Eder Montero and Alex Raij – with the collaboration of the Basque Government of Bizkaia. This year, nearly 700 bottles were consumed and close to $10,000 was gathered destined for the NGO “Sanctuary for Families,” dedicated to supporting families who are victims of gender violence.

Do you want to teach Basque language and culture in Germany or Ireland? The Etxepare Basque Institute has opened the selection period for lecturers at universities in Frankfurt, and Konstanz in Germany and in Cork in Ireland. The offer at the University of Kontanz is for school years 2013-2014, 2014-2015 and the other in Frankfurt is for this coming year 2013-2014. The offer for Cork will be for three school terms from 2013-2016.

Basque musicians and artists who are younger than 35 from both the Basque Country and the Diaspora are invited to participate in the first edition of the Mikel Laboa award, created by the chair by the same name at the University of the Basque Country. Participants are asked to compose a song in Basque inspired by the theme: “Doinua hitz, hitza doinu” (melody word, word melody). The deadline to submit proposals, one per participant, is September 16. The winner will receive 3,000 Euros.

The Jakiberri project --an initiative of (I+D+i) aimed to create a natural Basque food that is healthy, diverse, nutritious, fast-food meal-- has launched a contest on the internet. Participants should propose a name in Basque of the concept “Healthy Basque Fast Food.” It is easy to participate, just fill out the online questionnaire with your proposal. The deadline to enter is June 28.
