Hotel Iturregi in Getaria The British magazine Food and Travel has chosen the Iturregi Hotel in Getaria as one of the six best in the world as part of the Readers Awards 2013 contest that ends on August 25. Until then, internet users can vote for their preferred hotel on the magazine’s website. The award ceremony will take place in September. With your help the Hotel Iturregi could be the winner. Music, fun and good food at the 2013 Utah Euskal Etxea Summer Picnic

Utah'ko Triskalariak performing at the Basque Club of Utah's Summer Picnic (photo UtahEE) The Basque Club of Utah celebrated its annual picnic on June 23, a festive day in the open air that gathered members from the club and the American West. The event included a performance by the Utah’ko Triskalariak, club dancers that are raising money to travel to New York to show their great repertoire of Basque dances in the Big Apple. The group also participated in the Living Traditions Festival in Salt Lake City where the club had a stand with Basque cuisine, as every year.

Strengthening of the EHMG Seminar that will celebrate its 10th edition in New York

Pedro Oiarzabal presenting on day two of the seminar on a panel composed of Joseba Etxarri (EuskalKultura.com), Oscar Alvarez Gila (Univ. of the Basque Country), and Jon Ander Ramos also of the Univ. of the Basque Country (photo EuskoSare.org) The ninth edition of the seminar on emigration and the Basque Diaspora, Euskal Herria Mugaz Gaindi (EHMG), has been described by organizers as “a success from a scientific standpoint, informative, of assistance.” According to historian, Pedro Oiarzabal, among the audience there were “emigrants and exiles that have returned to the country coming from Argentina, the US, Mexico and Venezuela” and presenters from Basque universities as well as “from Argentina, Canada, Spain, Italy and Poland.” This edition has strengthened the EHMG and has reinvigorated it for its next challenge: the celebration of its tenth anniversary, with a conference in New York City as part of the Centennial events of the NY Euzko Etxea Basque club.

The Necochean Basque dancers celebrated St John by performing the dances that they will debut in the Basque Country in July

San Juan in Necochea (photo EE) Another version of the Festival of San Juan (St John) took place this weekend in Necochea. Dressed in colorful costumes and spreading joy with dancing and music, the local Basque club dancers once again gave life to the old celebration and burned a giant witch in front of the clubhouse. Once the flames began to fade, the dance continued in the Basque club with a special program. The participants of Hator Hona 2013 shared with those present the show that they will perform in several places in the Basque Country in July. These presentations were deemed of public interest by the local town.

William Douglass gives a lecture in Havana whose Basque club is committed to revitalization and announces new activities

Historian William Douglass, during his talk, along with Basque club president Renato Garcia Egusquiza (photo Goitia) On June 12th, former director and professor emeritus of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, William Douglass, gave a lecture in Havana on Basque culture. The event is one of the many planned by the Basque-Navarrese Charitable Association in Havana. It is committed to revitalization and has already planned various activities for the coming weeks. For example, on July 6th, there will be an event to celebrate San Fermin, and later in July, there will be a trip for members to the province of Matanzas; a area with a strong Basque historical presence.

Viña celebrated Txistulari Eguna for the first time thanks to the group Hilario Olazaran and Gure Etorkia

Dancers and musicians from Gure Etorkia and the group Hilario Olazaran in the streets of Viña del Mar, Chile The Chilean txistu and Hilario Olazaran dance group, celebrated in collaboration with the Gure Etorkia Cultural Center, the first “Txistulari Eguna,” last May 19th. The participants moved through the streets of Viña del Mar, in a kalejira that ended with a Basque dance exhibition. Prior, participants attended the events of the “Day of Galician Literature,” organized by the “Cultural Center of Friends of Galicia in Viña del Mar,” with a reading of a poem of Joseba Sarrionandia.

Indianoak 2013 departed from Trois Pistoles with the good wishes from the people Miq'mak

The local Miq'mak people cunducted a ceremony to asko for protection for the boat and the rowers (photo ADaraspe) After a weekend of cultural events, the expedition Indianoak 2013, departed on Sunday from the town of Trois Pistoles, Quebec. Over the next three weeks, the group of rowers from Ibaialde Association (Labourd) and the Quebec Basque Club, will travel 500 kilometers up the St. Lawrence river, as the Basque whalers did in the sixteenth century. Before leaving, the local Miq'maks conducted a ceremony to ask for good omens for the trawler and its crew.

This is the book we have raffled: "Basques. Their tongue through History" The participants in our last drawing answered the question: “What does it mean for you to be Basque?” It was a simple question, but many answered with enthusiasm. We received numerous responses, however, we could only choose four winners of the book, “Basques. Their tongue through History” by Xamar, published by Editorial Pamiela. The winners of the book were from Argentina, United States, Venezuela and Mexico. Congratulations winners, and thank you to the participants!

Atxaga's "Obabakoak" will star in the 6th Reading of Basque Classics at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao

Detail from the poster od the 6th Reading of Basque Classics The novel, “Obabakoak,” one of the masterpieces of Basque literature, celebrates its 25th year with the VI Reading Classics in Euskara, organized by euskaltegi Zaharra Bilbao. Next Thursday, the continuous reading will begin at 8:00am at the Teatro Arriaga, starting with the author himself, Atxaga. The reading will be on stage in person, and through videos from Basque Centers around the world. Starting today, additional activities will take place in the square.
