The Laurak Bat Basque Club in Buenos Aires won’t have much time to rest this summer since it is in the middle of finalizing details for its 140th anniversary activities. The program will begin in March and even if there are a few ends to tie up, like surprises that won’t be revealed until it’s time to celebrate, we can anticipate the main proposals.

The Gure Mendietakoak Basque Club in Caldas, Antioquia, closed 2016 very satisfied with its activities and its contribution to making people aware and sharing the Basque culture in this part of Colombia. Recently, some members of this young Patagonian Basque club gathered at an end of year dinner and proposed a new first activity to begin 2017: an outing that includes a walk to the mouth of the Confluencia, a natural luxury, to enjoy its panoramic views. After lunch, there will be an afternoon of open air Basque games, near the joint of the Neuquen and Limay rivers. The walk is easy and allows anyone wishing to, to participate.

This institution founded in 1877, the Basque-Navarran Charity Center in Havana, better known now as the Euskal Etxea of Cuba – Cubako Euskal Etxea, celebrated its General Assembly on December 18th and reviewed the year while presenting plans for 2017. One of the main concerns for the coming year will be the celebration of the 140th anniversary of the club that will be celebrated with a week of activities in July. “Everyone is invited,” club president Renato Garcia Egusquiza said.

Following the resignation of the person who was initially assigned the post, the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country, published this month the naming of Intza Balenciaga, who had been initially named to serve in Vitoria-Gasteiz, for the vacancy in Boise, Idaho beginning on December 16th, although she is not expected in Boise until the beginning of the new year due to visa constraints. Mikel Moreno Fernandez will be the new intern at the Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

To begin the New Year with a good plan is more than hoping for it, and a plan that includes getting to know Euskal Herria or returning there during the winter in Argentina, summer in Europe is without a doubt a very good one. The contingent will leave Ezeiza on August 24th and will submerge themselves in the life, geography and culture of Euskal Herria for 17 days, in the constant company of tour organizer, Mariana Domine Irigoyen.

This contest aims to support and stimulate the use of Euskera in the heart of the Basque clubs and communities, organized by the Euskaltzaleok and Laurak Bat Basque Clubs in Valencia, in two categories: those who are studing Basque and native or fluent speakers. We are coming to the end of 2016 and along with that the end of the term of current President of the University of the Basque Country, Iñaki Goirizelaia, who after serving two terms, and eight years in the job, will now pass the baton to Nekane Balluerka, member of his team and the one elected last November to replace him. Goirizelaia, Professor of Telematics Engineering, and 58 years of age, will travel in 2017 to the US, where he will teach post-doc courses at Boise State University beginning in March.

As every year at this time, Lehendakari Urkullu has sent his traditional Christmas message to euskal etxeas and Basque communities around the world. On this occasion, after a year of commemorating and recognizing the first Lehendakari, Jose Antonio Aguirre, and that first Basque Government and the Basques and friends of Basques in the Diaspora who welcomed them in this difficult time in history. Urkullu also mentions the Basque Global Network.
