She is a descendant of Basque from both sides, daughter of Cesar Solanes Aurtenechea and Mariana Domine Irigoyen, and great-great-granddaughter of the victim of the bombing, Josefa Echandia Magunacelaya. In the year of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika she will be the focus of a documentary by Euskal Telebista. The cameras will arrive on March 20th to her home and Basque club in Arrecifes, to later jump to Gernika and the Museum of Queen Sofia in Madrid, where Picasso’s painting is housed. It was a gala evening that was full of emotions to celebrate the reopening of the Fronton Mexico, Mexico Jai Alai. The red carpet at its entrance welcomed everyone attending to this magnificent Art Deco building construction of 1929. Men and women elegantly dressed filled the stands and high-ranking representatives from institutions and businesses alike were also in attendance. On Saturday, March 18th, the heart of the city will again be the site of a huge exhibition of Basque culture. As part of the “Buenos Aires Celebrates” project auspiced by the city government and organized by the Laurak Bat Basque Club, this year’s BAC will also be included as part of the 140th Anniversary Festivities of the club that will begin on Monday and conclude on Sunday. A half dozen Basque theater companies will perform their work in Costa Rica and Uruguay this summer as part of the dFeria Abroad, a new initiative that was created as an extension, of the Performing Arts Fair in Donostia that closed its 23rd edition last night. The hope is to add Mexico and Colombia to the tour in 2018 and support from the Etxepare Institute and the Eurolatinoamericana Network of Performing Arts (Redelae) is also expected. The day has come and everything is ready at Laurak Bat to celebrate the 140th anniversary of its foundation. The activities will begin on Monday, with a tribute to club presidents, and will conclude on Sunday with a banquet at the clubhouse. A full week that includes Buenos Aires Celebrates 2017 and the first visit to the country of the new Director of Basque Communities Abroad, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu.

The 14th edition of Laburbira in on. The project, supported by Topagunea has the goal of providing a greater diffusion of Basque language short films made in the Basque Country as well as in the Diaspora. This year, four euskal etxeas have joined another 28 cities and communities in the Basque Country, so spectators in Paris, New York, London and Valencia will be able to see the new crop of films at their local clubs.

As is tradition, the Aberri Etxea Basque Club, which brings together Basque communities in Viedma and Carmen de Patagones (limit between the Argentine provinces of Buenos Aires and Rio Negro-Patagonia), participated in the parade of the Patagonian Sovereignty Festival, organized by the city of Carmen de Patagones. Basque club members donned typical costumes and waved Ikurriñas for the large crowd.

March 8th marks International Women’s Day, which folks at Boise State University will be celebrating by paying tribute to Basque women as part of an exhibit, as well as to one woman in particular, Eloise Garmendia Bieter. The inauguration of the Eloise Garmendia Bieter Chair will include an afternoon of Basque songs performed by local singers, followed by a reception in the Student Union Art Gallery where the exhibit is located. Both events are free and open to the public.

The literary contest “Amazing Stories,” organized by Corpus Christi Eusko Etxea is celebrating its 9th edition this year and organizers have decided to give a new step and invite writers in Spanish, Euskera and Mbyá-guaraní to take part. The local Basque Club has a strong commitment not just with Basques and the Basque culture, but also with the local native communities, their language and culture.

Last week’s Official Bulletin of the Basque Country, included the Lehendakari’s decree renewing members of its Advisory Board, after the electoral process and changes in some of the entities that comprise it. The new Advisory Board met on March 1. Basque club representatives at the meeting were: Arantxa Anitua (Argentina), Nerea Palacios (Mexico) and Unai Lauzirika (Germany).
