Once again the San Juan Basque club made it its responsibility to represent the Basque Country at the National Sun Festival. This year they participated with a food stand as well as on stage where they performed. Members of the Basque club are happy with the experience which encouraged them to get all of their 2017 activities going.

Supported by the Aviron Bayonnais Club in the city of Baiona, the Rugby School will function at the Basque clubhouse in La Plata as well as at the club’s field, in City Bell. Classes at the Rugby School will begin in March, as well as the rest of the cultural, social and sporting activities that the Basque club offers to the community.

In the heart of its 35th anniversary celebration the Basque Cultural Center awarded its 2017 Bizi Emankorra awards, lifetime achievement awards to three of its members: Angel Arriada, Louis Marticorena and Jeanne Mazeris. Center president, Gracian Goyhenetche, thanked them for their contribution and Johnny Curutchet composed some special verses for the occasion that everyone sang along to (see video).

A group of members and friends of the Euskal Sustraiak Basque Club worked feverishly for three intense days painting the clubhouse. After the work was done, the club held its first Basque dinner of the year and is now getting ready for the official kick off of the program of activities for 2017 that begins on march 18th with the presentation of its dantzaris in the capital at “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country.”

The San Francisco Basque Cultural Center, Basque reference for the entire west coast, commemorated its 35th anniversary last weekend in style. The program ran Saturday and Sunday with musicians, and pilotaris from the Basque Country who were joined by local players. Many people from San Francisco and surrounding areas and states attended, resulting in a successful celebration. Zorionak!

Two dozen members and friends of the Baskos de la Confluencia Basque Club enjoyed nature together, specifically to the “Mirador de la Confluencia” (View point of the Confluencia) where they not only drank mate, but where they also flew the Ikurriña. Encouraged by the nice experience, members of the new Basque club are already thinking about doing it again, and are also planning a cooking course, film series and txalaparta workshops for 2017.

The Stella Restaurant at the Cedar House Sport Hotel in Truckee, California, is not a typical restaurant. Instead of providing nightly dinners like other restaurants do, they specialize in custom dining options for groups and families, including a “Pop up Dinner Series” several times a month. This Friday, February 25th, diners will have a rare opportunity to experience Basque food in this small mountainous community.

Victor Mendizabal, originally form Ordizia, was a relevant member of the Basque-American Diaspora in Argentina, one of the supporters of the school and the Euskal Echea Association in Llavallol, and patron and selfless contributor in several of its support initiatives, in both the Basque and local Argentine communities, as in his hometown of Ordizia. The Victor Mendizabal Foundation in Ordizia has opened the application period for the scholarships bearing his name in various research fields.

The Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea has proposed two important goals for 2017: the organization of an International Meeting of Basque Clubs, with the participation of clubs in Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile; and the consolidation of the Bodega Harriague Cultural Space. Besides these, the Basque club has already begun its activities with Euskera and a talk on the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika.

The Center for Basque Studies Press, at the University of Nevada, Reno, announced two new titles in its February e-Newsletter. As part of the Center’s mission to “conduct, facilitate and disseminate original Basque-related research in the humanities…” publishing in English has become one of the Center’s main activities. The latest publications e-newsletter announced these new titles: Macbeth in Basque and Contemporary Basque Literature.
