The Havana Euskal Etxea in Cuba will celebrate its 140th anniversary July 8-16, and will do so with a program of events that includes socializing with members and friends, a performance by Bizkaian musician, Joseba Gotzon, and recently confirmed to EuskalKultura.com, a Basque film series organized by the Traveling Basque Film Series in Buenos Aires.

The University of Nevada Press at the University of Nevada Reno has recently announced its new website. This press, originally founded by Robert Laxalt in 1961, was initially the only resource for books in English about the Basques. It continues to publish books on Basque topics along with a wide array of others of local and regional interest.

The Forum of Communities and Villa Nueva enjoyed an excellent debut in the 30th edition of the Festival of Communities in the city of Alta Gracia. The Euzko Etxea Basque Club, member of the Forum, was again responsible for representing the Basque culture at the event, from top to bottom on stage with music, costumes, and typical dances from the Basque Country.

Five stamps featuring UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Canada have been released, declaring their importance to world history and heritage. One of these features Red Bay Basque Whaling Station, on the south coast of Labrador. These five now complete the odyssey of Canadian UNESCO sites.

The city of San Nicolas once again hosted the intensive Basque summer course that is part of Euskera Munduan managed by HABE. Organized by FEVA and the local Euskal etxea, the Barnetegi ran from January 21-28. Before returning to Europe, director of the program Kinku Zinkunegi, shared his reactions to the course as well as news about new HABE agreements signed by Basque clubs and federations in South America.

As soon as the Basque club presents the necessary documentation, the city will provide them with a facility. According to club sources, the facility will not only accommodate club activities, but it is especially well-located, near Liceo 3, high school. “This will surely allow us to be closer to the community,” club member, Angel Cameto, said to EuskalKultura.com.

The offer is aimed at Basque clubs who wish to be included in the annual Basque film activities. The proposal not only includes screenings but also the delivery of allusive material and debate afterwards, guided by expert Carlos Gabilondo. Remember this is free to Basque clubs. Clubs are encouraged to reserve dates as soon as possible, to facilitate travel and title selection.

The radio program, “Palabra de Vasco” (Basque Word) began airing some 15 years ago, in mid-2002, in Rosario, Argentina. Since then it has stayed the path, and continues to be broadcast today, not only for listeners in Rosario and the Province of Santa Fe and surrounding area, but also for anyone anywhere in the world wishing to follow their news, live as well as recorded.

Another edition of San Sebastian was experienced in Necochea, organized by the local Euskal Etxea and with the participation, as every year, of the locals and friends from other cities and Basque clubs. A January without a rest for members of the Euzko Etxea, who also prepared a week before traditional Basque dishes at the city’s Communites Fair.

Dr. William A. Douglass, Professor Emeritus at the University of Nevada, Reno where he founded the Basque Studies Program, will inaugurate this week a new cultural series at Boise State’s Basque Studies Program. The series, the “Elorriaga Basque Culture Series,” is named after John Elorriaga, generous supporter of the program.
