You know your event is good when it draws huge crowds without a whisper of promotion. And although the Basque Festival is full to bursting each year, newcomers are always welcome. The festival, put on annually by the Kern County Basque Club at its South Union Avenue clubhouse, is back this weekend with dancing, handball, a card tournament and that famous food. The festival takes place every Memorial Day weekend and sees more than 2,000 in attendance over the two days.

Eighty years ago this week a cargo ship filled with thousands of children set sail from Spain to Britain to escape the Spanish Civil War on a journey that would ultimately allow a colony of Spanish children to stay in Angus. The destruction of the town of Guernica by Nazi planes under the direction of Francisco Franco in April 1937 saw the Basque government appeal to foreign nations to give temporary asylum to children.

El encuentro culinario por excelencia de Colombia, el Foro Gastronómico Internacional Alimentarte, cumple este año su cuarta edición y lo hace promovido y organizado conjuntamente por la Fundación Corazón Verde y Basque Culinary Center. And the third selected Basque writer is… The selection committee of the Beste Hitzak–Other Words programme, in a meeting held on the 10th of May, 2017, selected Beatriz Chivite Ezkieta for the third residency of this literature creation project. Chivite will be in Maribor, Slovenia, between June and August of 2017.

Basque singers and “Gateau Basque” are new to this year’s annual Basque Festival and Picnic Sunday at the Los Banos Fairgrounds. The festival and picnic event is a longstanding tradition honoring the Basque heritage and population in Los Banos and the Central Valley entering its 53rd year, Mike Etchepare said.
