On May 27th the Trapagaran Ibiladia will be celebrated, the festival in support of the Ikastolas in Bizkaia organized each year by the itxaropena Ikastola. As every year, a song will serve as the soundtrack of the festivities but this year Itxaropena has decided to organize an international competition in order to pick this year’s song. The only condition is that it be in Basque and that it contains the words “ibiladia” and “ikastola.” The deadline for submissions is January 12th and a jury will choose the five best songs, among which the winner will be chosen by popular vote. On a similar note, we have learned of the XX Love Letters Contest in Basque from Bergara.

Trapaga, Bizkaia.  The Itxaropena Ikastola and the Ibilialdia Association have put together a contest in order to choose the song for Ibilialdia 2012.  The contest is open to groups all over the world, and EuskalKultura.com would like to encourage musicians, composers and groups in the Diaspora to participate and take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to global Basque culture and make it known in Euskal Herria.

It wouldn’t be the first time.  There is precedent with Igotz Ziarreta, from the Barcelona Euskal Etxea, who won the 2007 poster contest for that year’s Durango Book Fair, after finding out about the contest on EuskalKultura.com, according to the artist himself.  Or the Basque-Argentinean group Maral, who was invited to sing in the Basque Country in 2008 during the International Day of Euskera as well as at the Durango Book Fair, after finding out about the possibility in this bulletin.  So why not participate from the Diaspora?

The contest has two phases:  the organizers will first choose the top five songs; and in the second ,the winner will be chosen by popular vote, conducted through social networks and a website.

The deadline to submit songs is January 12, 2012.  Good luck!

Love Letter Contest

The Jardun association in Bergara has also announced the XX Love Letters in Basque contest that is also open to participants all over the world.  The condition is that letters must be written in Basque and must be original, unedited work.  Submissions may be sent through ordinary mail or emailed; the deadline for these submissions is January 7, 2012.  First place winner will receive 500 Euros and the second place winner will receive 250 Euros.
