The object of the contest, “Txioka Sarean,” is to encourage people to wish each other Happy Holidays in Basque, awarding the best messages sent on Twitter or Facebook. The deadline to enter is December 18th. A jury will choose the top three messages that will receive the following prizes: a Christmas basket, a stay for two at the Areatza Spa and a Samsun Galaxy Pad donated by the Eguren Appliances in Lekeitio. We have contacted the Azkue Foundation and were reassured that the contest is open to Basques all over the world, and if the winner is in the Diaspora, that the prize will be sent to wherever he/she lives.

Bilbao, Bizkaia.  The Azkue Foundation and Bizkaia Irratia want to encourage the use of Basque when wishing a Merry Christmas or a Happy New Year and so they have launched a contest called, “Txioka Sarean.”  The three best messages sent via social networking between December 1 and 18, will be awarded.

Two ways to participate:

1.  Sending a message via Twitter to hash tag #gabonagurra.

2.  Joining the Facebook group Gabonetan euskaraz zoriondu daigun!  (Let’s celebrate Christmas in Basque).

All messages must be in Basque.  Regarding format, written messages are as good as others such as Christmas cards, photo montages, audiovisual…

Three categories

Prizes will be awarded in three different categories: most original message, most original medium, and best message in Bizkaian Basque (contest organizers are Bizkaian).  The contest is open to Basques throughout the world, and as has clarified, if the winner resides outside of the Basque Country then the prize will be sent wherever he/she lives.

Prizes will be awarded on December 21st, on Saint Thomas Day at the Euskaltzaindia headquarters in Bilbao.
