Encouraged by the 2013 experience, the Basque Argentinean Basque Language Academy has decided to repeat its Triki Poteo, touring bars to the rhythm of the trikitixa and including this as part of its annual activities. The date is March 8th, starting at 7:00pm. The ENE Award winner institution also let us know that Basque classes will begin on March 10th as well as its regular offerings. “This year, in addition Euskaltzaleak will celebrate its 70th anniversary so the program of activities is full. The main celebrations will take place in July,” said Mariana Arla, club vice-president.

As part of his doctorate project, Josu Martinez found a copy of Sor Lekua, (birth place) described in bibliographic sources as the first film in Basque, which was given up for lost until this fin. The film he found, nevertheless, is a version without audio, which prompted the researcher to work twice as hard to find a copy with the original audio. Knowing that Sor Lekua was meant for the “Basque colonies” outside of the Basque Country, Martinez continued his search in the Diaspora. Zinemaldia 2014, the Basque Film Festival organized by the Euskal Etxea in Barcelona begins today. In this, its 9th edition, it has made the leap from the Basque club to the local Girona theaters and will also premier an official competition. The eleven participating films, all debuted in Catalonia, are vying for the Txapela d’Or award that will be decided by a jury made up of members of the Catalan film world: Aina Clotet, Marc Recha and Jordi Ambròs. Zinemaldia also promises affordable ticket prices: 4,5 Euros.

In a communication made yesterday, members of Eusko Ekintza of Argentina announced the creation of the Manuel de Irujo Institute. “The proposal, that will be developed as part of the abertzale institution, will follow the historic objectives of Eusko Ekintza-Acción Vasca, that is, to disseminate Basque culture and nationalism, but oriented in this case more towards the academic,” according to project organizers. Among their 2014 activities, the Manuel de Irujo Institute will hold conferences, presentations and book publications as well as create a service for family reunions.

Tomorrow, Feb. 13, the Basque community in Idaho will gather in the Capitol Building to show their gratitude for years of support from the state and to pay homage to Pete Cenarrusa. Before he past away last year, Cenarrusa served as the Secretary of State in Idaho for decades and promoted numerous Basque-American cultural, social and political initiatives. The ceremony will feature performances by Oinkari Basque Dancers and Herribatza Dantzariak, music from Txantxangorriak and txalaparta.

Fans of Athletic in Mexico and the United States were excited to hear that the Bilbao team could finish their season with some friendly matches in America. The location of these matches was narrowed down to Mexico City, New York and another American city. EuskalKultura.com has contacted the Ibaigane club and confirmed that this plan was proposed to the League, but that no final decision has been made.

After five consecutive years, the 2014 edition of the Argentinean Summer Basque University, at the Euskal Echea Association will not be held this year due to lack of enrollment, according to project coordinator Enrique Aramburu. “Due to the lack of enrollment this year we have decided to cancel classes.” “This doesn’t mean that we have given up on activities related to Basque Studies, just that this year they will take place throughout the year as a program that the Center for Advanced Basque Studies will carry out.” EuskalKultura.com publishes the tentative program.

The Necochea Basque club started its 2014 calendar with a big celebration of San Sebastian Day. The program of events, that included sporting, cooking recreational and Tamborrada events, concluded with a dinner that was enjoyed by nearly 300 diners. New this year, the 34th edition of the event, was Pintxo Eguna that took place in the “Konstituzio Plaza in Donostia,” recreated for that purpose in the clubhouse.

On Friday, 21 February, there will be a notable Basque presence at the University of Chicago, USA, as a part International Mother Language Day. Organized by the Delegation of Euskadi in Estados Unidos with the help of the Etxepare Basque Institute, there will be a conference, entitled “Celebrating Basque on International Mother Language Day”, held about Basque language and culture. Experts, Xabier Irujo, Karlos Arregi and Amaia Gabantxo will offer three talks on dialectology, poetry and preservation of the Basque language.
