Victor Esain, one of the founders of the Fresno Basque club and NABO representative, passes away in Fresno, California

Victor Esain passed away on February 16th in Fresno at the age of 80 - GB. Californian-Basque Victor Esain, age 80, passed away last Sunday, February 16th in his hometown of Fresno. He was a very-well known man at the heart of the Basque community. He spoke Basque and was one of the founders of the Fresno Basque Club in 1978. His work as NABO Mus Chair led him to organize or collaborate in more than 25 national tournaments and 10 international Mus tournaments. In 2004, the Society of Basque Studies in America named him to their Hall of Fame and in 2011, he was awarded NABO’s Bizi Emankorra, lifetime achievement award.

Bizigarri, a new option in Basque gastronomy in Mar del Plata with the best of the sea and the pampa

Since last month, in the city of Mar del Plata the main tourist center in the province of Buenos Aires, has a new restaurant where you can enjoy Basque specialties, basic dishes created with fresh fish and shellfish but also with meat choices to complete the menu. Bizigarri is run by its owners, trained in Hondarribia and is open from Tuesday to Sunday at night on Avellaneda street on the corner of San Luis.

Writer, Itxaro Borda and director of the EKE, Pantxoa Etxegoin, to take part in the Book Fair in Modena, Italy

Basque writer Itxaro Borda (photoEKE) Writer Itxaro Borda and director of the Euskal Kultur Erakundea, Pantxoa Etxegoin, will be in the city of Modena, Italy this weekend to participate in the seventh edition of the BUK Book Fair there. Both will participate in a round table on creation and communication entitled, "Il testo infinito,” as well as inaugurate a photo exhibit on the Northern Basque Country. In addition, singer, Anne Etchegoien, will give a concert presenting her album Les Voix Basques (Basque Voices) that has been very successful in France, along with the Aizkoa choir.

Lamina and Basajaun are taking shape in Paris to debut at the Basque club’s Carnival parade

A lot of excitement and smiles seeing the Lamina and Basajaun take shape at the Basque club workshop (photoParisEE) This year the Paris Euskal Etxea will make a mark on Carnival with a parade through the streets led by Basque mythological characters like the Lamina and Basajaun. They have been working hard for weeks at the club, in a creative workshop that is taking shape, little by little. Next Sunday, March 2nd they will run the streets of the city in a parade, from the Place Gambetta to the Place de la Republique. The club invites everyone to join in and leave a Basque mark on the Parisian Carnival.

The Urrundik Basque Association will host outdoor theater replacing “La casita de mis viejos”

Members of the Urrundik theater group (photoEE) For more than seven years, the Theater Group of the Urrundik Basque Association in Parana in the Argentinean province of Entre Rios has become a reference for this discipline in the area. Thanks to actresses directed by Augusto Carballal, the local Basque club will now open is 2014 theater activities. The play will be performed tomorrow, Friday the 21st on the clubhouse patio, where they will also provide refreshments and the opportunity to spend the evening with friends.

Basque Club in Miami raises nearly $1,500 for the treatment of Joseba Andoni in a Valentine’s Day celebration

Group picture of the women who attended the party, mostly dressed in red (photo MiamiEE) The Basque Club of Miami continued with their fundraising campaign to help pay the medial expenses of Joseba Andoni, an eight-year-old resident of the American city suffering from developmental issues following an accident in his infancy. Last Sunday, Feb 16, Basque center partners gathered to celebrate Valentine´s Day and raise money to help Andoni´s family with the cost of his treatment. All together they raised nearly $1,500.

Gure Ametza Basque Club, in Argentina, announces its program for 2014, ending the year with its 20th Anniversary

Last newsletter of the Gure Ametza Basque Club Founded in 1994, Gure Ametza of Rio Cuarto, in the southern Argentinian province of Cordoba, has promoted the Basque Culture in the area for two decades. Years of works have given outstanding results the members of the House are proud of and for that they will offer an Anniversary Dinner on the 18th of October. Meanwhile, throughout 2014, the usual activities will continue at the institute, such as taverns, Basque classes, paella sales, Basque movies, lectures, and the publication of the newsletter, that will all be added to the Anniversary commemoration.

Job Offer: The Basque Government opens up positions in its Delegations in New York (2) and Mexico (1)

The Basque Government published yesterday, through the Secretariat for Foreign Action, a call for three jobs in two of its Delegations in the world. There are two positions in the Delegation in the US and Canada that is headquartered in New York; and another in the Delegation in Mexico. In the first case, the position is for a market analyst and the other is for an administrative assistant. In Mexico they are looking for a business technician that would be responsible for that area. The deadline to apply is March 2014.

"Gure Arropa" (Our Clothes) exhibit opens at the Museum of Decorative Arts of Buenos Aires on March 14th

Two models that will be on display at the Museum of Decorative Arts of Buenos Aires (photo M. Mignaburu) Organized by Laurak Bat of Buenos Aires, the exhibition featuring traditional Basque clothing will arrive next month at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Buenos Aires. As part of the exhibition, with the aim of raising awareness of the Basque culture from a more complete perspective, there will also be other activities such as singing and dancing, reading folktales and txistu recitals. Our Clothing will be open to visit from the 14th of March until the 27th of April.

The youth from Euskaldunak Quebec took to the streets of Montreal to sing Santa Agueda

Food and song practice during the Santa Agueda festivities (photoQuebecEE) Attracting youth and getting them involved in the Basque club is one of the biggest goals facing Basque communities in the Diaspora, but it seems like the Euskaldunak Quebec have found a solution. For several months a group of youth has committed themselves actively to the club and has carried out several activities. During San Sebastian day, they played the tamborrada for the first time, and now they have gotten involved in Santa Agueda, that is celebrated singing through the streets of Montreal.
