Basque writer Bernardo Atxaga will begin today in Adelaide on his Australian tour, where he will participate in various talks and literary gathers to talk about his work and Basque literature in general. Atxaga will participate today in the “In Translation” section of the “Adelaides’ Writers Week,” and tomorrow he will talk about some of his best-known works like Obabakoak. On Wednesday he will travel to Sydney, and on Thursday he’ll be at the University of Melbourne.

March 8th is nearing, next Saturday when various sectors of society will be celebrating “Women’s Day” with various educational and recreational activities. In Argentina, the Basque community recognizes the importance of this event and joins in the festivities as many Basque clubs who invite everyone to celebrate the day. Organized by the Denak Bat Basque Club in Cañuelas, the Regional Dantzari get-together has fixed the date for this year’s event. Over the eight years of its existence the gathering has achieved attracting groups that travel several hundred kilometers to participate. The festival will be held April 5th and 6th. The Ontario Basque Club in Oregon celebrated its 67th Annual Basque Benefit Dinner/Dance last Saturday that gathered nearly 450 people to enjoy the Basque culture and fundraise for local entities by donating money raised in the lamb raffle. The event included an exhibit of over 100 photos from previous editions, and a photo call that resulted in one of the most fun and popular and whose images can be seen on the club’s Facebook page.

An important place for recreation in the city, especially for sporting activities, the Euzko Txokoa Basque club in Gral. Acha celebrated its 49th anniversary this week. As part of the festivities, club directors have already started encouraging participation in next year’s 50th anniversary celebration that will be celebrated with a grand event in February of next year. The club has also announced its 2014 events that will include a wide range of activities including sports, culture, as well as the 42nd Provincial Veal Feast.

The Barcelona Euskal Etxea and the team responsible for Zinemaldia Cat were very satisfied with the support that they received in favor of Basque films as well as showing them in theaters. The public response was great, with 1,200 spectators. “We received a lot of interest from Basques in Barcelona and from Catalans,” Ekaitz Garate, festival organizer told EuskalKultura.com. “The last day, with Asier ETA biok, there were people left in the street, and due to the high demand, it is being re-premiered this week in the Girona theaters.”

The date is getting closer and awaited with anticipation. The Basque club in Arrecifes will be one of the Argentinean Basque clubs that has been around for a century and continues its tireless work in the maintenance and diffusion of the Basque culture, in the north of the province of Buenos Aires. As every February, the center celebrated another anniversary and this year did so with dinner “for members and friends who are always with us.” The celebration was one of the activities that the club carries out during the center, along with Basque classes and celebrating San Sebastian.

Thanks to its Basque Studies Program and the Basque community in Idaho, Boise State University (BSU) has created a scholarship destined for Basque students. The scholarship is for one year and would facilitate pursuing a doctorate in the prestigious program of Engineering and Electronics there. The scholarship includes tuition as well as a stipend ranging between $18,000 and $25,000 to cover living expenses. Applications should be submitted to BSU by March 15th.

One of the main goals of the South American tour, from the end of April to the beginning of May, will be to celebrate 32 years of the Bizkaian musician’s career as well as debut some of the songs on his last album Erotisme. Joseba Gotzon will be performing with Galician singer Xoán Curiel that he has been working on his new project with. The tour will begin on April 24th and even if the complete tour has yet to be determined, performances are foreseen in San Nicolas, Rosario and Parana.
