As part of the activities carried out on March 8th in celebration of International Women’s Day, the Honorable City Council of the Argentinean city of Pergamino, in the province of Buenos Aires, held a ceremony to honor the work and dedication of women in that community. Alicia Ruiz Moreno, the first Occupational Therapist in the city and current Vice-President of the local Basque club, Lagun Onak, was one of the honorees.

The Etxepare Basque Institute has opened the call for various grants aimed at the promotion of the Basque language and culture abroad. There are three types of grants: one aimed at the promotion of film and literature, another aimed at tours and theater seasons, and the last one is aimed at participation in international art festivals.

As part of the agreement signed between the Zazpirak Bat Basque club and the College of Humanities and Arts in the city of Rosario, the program of activities of the Basque Language and Culture Chair will begin on April 4th. The series will open with a conference on Minority Languages with a course on Euskera that will begin on Tuesday on April 8th. Regarding other activities, the carnival atmosphere continues in the city and the “Zazpi” is getting ready for the big costume party next Saturday the 22nd.

A group in Bakersfield, CA is in the process of filming a documentary about the Basque population in the western United States that will tell the story of Basque immigration to America called “Disappearing West”. In making this film Beaux Mingus, Philippe Duhart, and Gina Napolitan hope to shed light on an largely overlooked but important segment of American history. They are currently collecting images and conducting interviews with Basque-Americans in the region. The film is expected to be finished within the next year. Anyone interested in contributing to the project is encouraged to contact the group.

The Barcelona Euskal Etxea published a job opening to cover the position of club coordinator inviting anyone interested to send them your resume as soon as possible. The person selected will be in charge of the cultural programming of the center as well as its finances, institutional relationships, communication and coordination of the club’s board of directors. This person will also carry out the programming, production, and post-production of the club’s series and festivals.

The inaugural event for the Gure Arropa-Our Clothes exhibit that comes to the National Museum of Decorative Art thanks to the Buenos Aires Laurak Bat Basque club, will take place today at 19:00. The collection of traditional Basque clothes, prepared by Magdalena Mignaburu will be exhibited until April 27th. As part of the exhibit, the public will be able to enjoy a complimentary program of activities that include artistic presentations, a commemoration of the Bombing of Gernika and the Aberri Eguna celebration. Anyone wishing to participate in today’s ceremony should get in touch with the Basque club’s secretary.

After the special 2013 edition of Hator Hona that took place in Euskal Herria, the program returns to Necochea, Argentina its place of origin. In its 10th edition, the program will take place at the Euzko Etxea Basque club in Necochea from July 10-August 10th. As every year, Basque youth from the Basque Country will come to Argentina to guide workshops and classes in music, dance, Basque, sports and other areas. The book Erbesteratuen oroimenak (Memory and Exile), by Gregorio Arrien, relates the activities carried out by exiled groups both in the Basque country and abroad from 1982-2012. Even if the story of the exiles and the children of war have been the object of several investigations, this work offers testimony of these groups of people that have begun a process of pioneering and recuperation, cultivating the memory of exile since the 1980s.

After last year’s success Euskaltzaleak in Buenos Aires repeated the experiment of organizing a Triki-poteo bringing this typical practice from the Basque Country to the heart of the city. The event was very well-received and gathered members from a large number of Basque club and associations from the capital, like Laurak Bat, Centro Navarro or Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea, or members of the surrounding clubs in Arrecifes, La Plata, Mar del Plata, Necochea or San Nicolas. It was a night marked by unity and a great atmosphere, accompanied also by a Scottish group the “Buenos Aires Tartan Army.”

This Friday, Mar. 14, the Basque Culture Center of South San Francisco will screen a documentary for its friends and associates as part of the cycle of Basque cinema organized by the Basque Educational Society. The film “No More Tour”, gives and audiovisual look into what could be the final tour of the well known Basque musician, Fermin Muguruza: 55 concerts in five months, “a map of resistance and complicity across the world”. Muguruza will attend the screening and present the film.
