Gure Esku Dago (It’s in our hands) is a movement in favor of the right to decide in the Basque Country. Its main goal is to achieve and adhere the people’s support for the Basques right to decide with the principal characteristic being that it is en masse and inviting all to participate. Among the activities supported is a Human Chain that will connect Durango to Pamplona on June 8th. According to organizers, until that date a large number of Diaspora institutions have joined in and invite everyone for various cities and countries to support the Chain.

The Parisian Sorbonne University III will be the site, today and tomorrow, of a conference on Euskera organized by the Basque language and culture lecturer there. Today, researchers Udane Atutxa and Eneko Zuloaga from the University of the Basque Country will talk about teaching Basque in Iparralde. Tomorrow the documentary The Origins of Euskera, a European Enigma, directed by Hasier Etxeberria will be shown followed by a debate via video conference with Ivan Igartua, also a professor at the University of the Basque Country.

The Jon Bilbao Chair will be inaugurated this month at the University of Nevada, Reno, created in honor of the great research that promoted the foundation of the Basque Studies Library at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Chair’s first incumbent is historian and Basque Diaspora expert, Pedro J. Oiarzabal. This makes the fifth Chair supported by the Institute in universities of recognized international prestige in cities like New York, Chicago, Frankfurt and Liverpool.

Another cycle has begun at Lizarraenea, where the historic Basque institutions in Buenos Aires Eusko Kultur Etxea- Eusketxe and the Ekin publishers are housed. Activities will begin fully this month and will be open to the public. Basque classes, dance workshops, music, history and literature and the traditional workshop on the Introduction to Euskal Herria are among this year’s offerings. In the same way, the institution invites artists who would like to exhibit their work and dancers who would like to join the Ekin Dantzari Taldea.

The Basque Association of Louisiana, in New Orleans, has organized an attractive Aberri Eguna celebration in which they hope to gather a large part of the Basque community in the area. The Louisiana Basque-American Society and Cultural Organization (LABASCO), the entity’s official name, has invited members and friends to New Orleans on April 20th. The event will include screenings of documentaries, a talk on the Basque presence in the area, and festivities with dinner and dance.

Prizes included copies of the books: Urruneko mendebalean artzain (Basque), Gardeners of Identity (English), Basques in Buenos Aires (Spanish), as well as the DVD of the documentary Zerutik sua dator. They will now travel to the Basque Country, Germany, Argentina and the US. The city of Bolivar, in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, accompanied the Navarrese club at its 60th anniversary celebration. The even took place at the clubhouse and gathered members of the dance groups that have been in existence since its foundation. Among the guests were members of the Navarrese club in Mar del Plata who traveled especially to participate in the event.

Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea was the host this weekend of two Basque club meetings: on Saturday it hosted the First Regional Meeting of European and Asia-Australian Basque clubs; and on Sunday it was the host of the annual meeting of Basque clubs in the Spanish State. Participating clubs included: Paris, Berlin, Rome, Shanghai, London, Bordeaux, Brussels, Barcelona, Townsville, Valencia, Madrid, Zaragoza, Pau, Sydney, Quart de Poblet, Salou and Valladolid. The idea came from Maria, from Abadiño who is currently the teacher at the Ikastola in Boise, as well as Ander Cimas also from Abadiño. “Marie told me that the ikastola needed a lot of things, and among them were Baserrritarra costumes for various celebrations, Christmas, Santa Ageda…. It occurred to me that many people could have old costumes at home that they may like to donate,” said Ander. Costumes gathered will be donated to the Ikastola and will be used from generation to generation.

The reunion that has been named “Zavaleteada” was organized by the Zavaleta family in Ramallo and gathered 250 descendants of the siblings Bartolome, Agustin, Josefa, Antonio and Jose Maria de Zavaleta, from Soraluze Gipuzkoa and who came to Argentina in the second half of the 19th century. During the day, memories reigned, along with Basque songs and good food, especially remembering family members who have already passed.
