The radio program “Presencia Vasca” in Parana began its 24th season with a hundred of messages

Federico Borras and Mikel Ezkerro on the "Presencia Vasca" radio program After some well-deserved time off, Federico Borras, puts his headphones again to start his 25th year on the air with the “Presencia Vasca” (Basque Presence) program. Broadcast from the city of Parana, Entre Rios, Argentina, the program was very well-received by listeners who have communicated with them to wish them well in the new season. According to Borras, “Presencia Vasca” will continue with its usual format with a column by Mikel Ezkerro, interviews, news and Basque music, and will have something new this year with a spot dedicated to Euskera.

Lamina and Basajaun giants by the Eskual Etxea debuted successfully and filled the Carnival in Paris with Basque color

The giant Lamina and Basajaun caught everyone's attention during the Carnival parade in Paris (photoParisEE) Last Sunday, March 2nd the Eskual Etxea in Paris joined in the Carnival parade for the first time, and did so successfully and very colorfully, thanks to the Lamina and Basajaun giants. The Basque club worked for weeks creating the mythological Basque characters in the largest size possible to lead the Basque contingent. Many friends of the club and Basques in Paris participated, dressed as men and women of the forest, or as laminak. We have included various photos published by the Paris Basque club on the internet.

La Plata distinguishes Mari Lazcano de Aramayo, as an outstanding woman posthumously

Mari Lazcano de Aramayo (photoEE) The “Outstanding Women” prize in the city of La Plata hopes to make the essential work of many women, done behind the scenes, more visible. That is why the Basque club proposed Mari Lazcano Olazcoaga de Aramayo as its 2014 candidate, a figure of utmost importance in the history of the club. “It will be a posthumous tribute but we thought it would be appropriate to do it now for having recently been the 100th anniversary of his birth,” according to Basque club sources. The award ceremony will take place on Monday March 10th as part of the “Women’s Day” festivities.

Itziar Aguirre, Basque-Argentinean chef doing a master class in Euskadi: “Arzak does magic in the kitchen”

Besides working at the Zazpirak Bat Restaurant in Rosario, Itziar Aguirre has also presented various cooking programs on TV in Argentina Itziar Aguirre, from Rosario and chef at the Zazpirak Bat Restaurant at the Basque club in Rosario, is living a dream. Since mid-February, she has been in the Basque Country doing a master cooking class with two of the most prestigious chefs: Juan Mari Arzak in Donostia and Eneko Atxa, at the Azurmendi restaurant in Larrabetzu. The meeting has been enriching for all involved. Itziar is from Argentina but speaks Basque and her restaurant serves traditional Basque dishes. Now, she will take what she has learned in the Basque Country to help give a qualitative boost to Basque club restaurants in the country.

Basque clubs added Basque booths, queens and masks to the Argentinean carnivals

Dantzaris from Denak Bat in Cañuelas celebrating Carnival (photoEE) The internet has been converted into a type of window for Basques in Argentina to see how Carnival is celebrated in the Basque Country. Even though the celebration in their own country also made quite an echo in February and came to a close last Tuesday, with events that entice the entire community. The Basque clubs were part of the festivities and participated very actively and they also stood out. As we saw on a button: the Denak Bat in Cañuelas won a prize: the candidate from Itxaropen in Saladillo was chosen as queen; and the Euskaldunak in Villegas was one of the institutions chosen to work the bar during the Corsican nights.

Job Offer: the University of Liverpool to hire a lecturer in Basque Studies

University of Liverpool is seeking to hire a Basque language lecturer The University of Liverpool has recently opened a position for a Lecturer in Basque. Candidates should have the following qualifications: a PhD in a related subject, a Certificate in Basque Studies (EGA or equivalent), a record of publications of international excellence and experience teaching Basque language and culture in Higher Education. The assistantship is supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute, but the University will be in charge of the selection process as this will be a fixed position there. The deadline for submission is Friday 4 April 2014.

“Dantz-ango” a new blog by Aitor Alava on Basque and Argentine Folklore, with dance as its focus

"Dantz-ango" blog's front page The blog’s goal is to disseminate Basque and Argentine folklore, and was created by Aitor Alava, a dantzari from Zuhatza, Araba, but residing in Argentina since 2004. With much experience on stage and instructing, the director of the Ekin Dantzari Taldea in Buenos Aires gives life to this proposal convinced the practice isn’t the only way to train a dancer. “If practice isn’t sustained with lectures, then the instruction is unbalanced,” he says. “Dant-ango” is available free on the internet.

Basque-Mexican Historian, Amaya Garritz, will be honored tomorrow on her career thanks to the National Autonomous University (UNAM) in Mexico, more specifically from her Institute of Historical Research. Garritz is an authority in the area of the Basque presence in Mexico and has organized several conferences in the last few years as well as activities dedicated to the topic. The day of tribute will take place at City University in Coyoacán, and will be attended by various history experts and genealogists.

“Gastronomic Patio” on March 15th in Buenos Aires, with participation of Laurak Bat and Euskaltzaleak

The Community Gastronomic Patio takes place every year in March Organized by the General Directorate of Communities and the Sub-secretary of Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, this 2014 “Gastronomic Patio” will take place on March 15th. As every year, as part of the festival, representatives from various countries will gather with their neighbors to enjoy typical dishes and original snacks. In the case of Basque gastronomy, it will be brought to the Avenida de Mayo thanks to the Laurak Bat and Euskaltzaleak Basque clubs.
