Basque-American researcher visits Valparaiso to do a study on the Basque community in Chile

Valezka Rojas, Archibaldo Uriarte and Vanesa Arozamena, during her visit to Valparaiso (photoValparaisoEE) Basque researcher Vanesa Arozamena, professor at the University of Portland, has recently visited Valparaiso, Chile to do a study on the history of local Basque community. Arozamena was at the Valparaiso Basque club, after reading the book Arrojos, dichas y nostalgias: Vascos en el Valparaiso del siglo XX, (Streams, Sayings and Nostalgia: Basques in Valparaiso of the 20th Century) by Rubila Araya Ariztia. During her stay, she interviewed members of the new generations of Basques born in Chile to “see how they maintain the memory and tradition and the role of the Basque club in all of this,” Arozamena explains.

Eztitxu was offered a job position to teach Basque and Basque Culture in California right after she finished her masters degree (Photo EH) Basque Philologist Eztitxu Hariñordoki (Baigorri, 1990) has been teaching Basque language and culture in Bakersfield, California since February and has just finished her duties. After having brought a bit of the Basque Country to her students at the Kern County Basque Club and to University students at CSUB she also participated in Udaleku, in Elko (NV), for the last two weeks. “It’s been beautiful getting up every morning to go teach the kids,” she told Euskalkultura.com.

The Gure Ametza Basque club in Rio Cuarto will begin a video Classical Opera Series this August

Gure Ametza's Opera Series will run from August to November The series will begin on August 7th with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and will close on November 27th with Verdi’s La Traviata and will take place on every Thursday in between. The event will provide an interesting collection of classic opera for fans. Admission is free and open to the public, even if attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated to local community centers.

The way of life of Basque sheepherders in America is exhibited at the Bertiz Natural Park, in Navarre

Members of Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan at the exhibit's inauguration (photo Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan) The exhibit, organized by the Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan Association, can be seen until August 31st at the Bertiz Natural Park. The collection of photographs exhibited was gathered little by little by the organization, selected by the sheepherders themselves among their albums and memories. They show how hard and solitary the work was, taking care of herds in the mountains in the west, but also the friendship and solidarity, “The values of these young men from Navarre that had to emigrate to sustain their families.” On July 13th these herders will receive another honor, this time as part of San Fermin, with the Alarde of the Txistulari Band being dedicated to them.

Gaztemundu 2014 started yesterday in Donostia, dedicated to dance group directors in the Diaspora

Asier Vallejo, Director of Basque Communities Abroad and Oier Araolaza program coordinator welcoming this year's Gaztemundu participants (photoEuskalKultura.com) Yesterday, July 6th this year’s Gaztemundu program, sponsored by the Basque Government, began in Donostia dedicated this year to the world of dance with participants coming from various Basque clubs from around the world. During two weeks, the 25 participants from Argentina, Chile, Spain, Uruguay and the US will share classes, dance rehearsals during a course coordinated by Oier Araolaza, dance expert and director of the dantzan.com website, which serves as a reference in the field.

Uruguayan Muralist Ibarguren offers his “Postcards from a Happy World” to the Basque Country and its Diaspora

Ibarguren's latest mural in Costa Rica (photoDI) Paintings and murals by painter, Damian Ibarguren, entitled, “Postcards from a Happy World,” are created in hopes “of giving the observer a moment of happiness in his/her daily life.” With this goal, and keeping the coming and going between the two peoples alive, the Uruguayan artist is offering himself to do murals in towns and cities in the Basque Country as well as in Basque clubs in the Diaspora. Ibarguren has done some 30 murals in Uruguay, two in Lebanon, and just finished one in Costa Rica.

Udaleku’s final performance served as the kick-off for this year’s Elko Basque Festival

Basque dances from Bizkaia were also part of the final performance (photoUdaleku2014) Udaleku 2014 came to a close last Friday, a summer camp for children organized by the federation of Basque clubs in North American, NABO. As in previous years, the camp was a wonderful experience for the children participating who were able to live and enjoy their Basque culture among friends. This year’s hosts were the Elko Euzkaldunak Basque club, and the dedication of professors and aides was once again brilliant. The two weeks concluded with a final performance where the kids showed off what they had learned for their family and friends, a wonderful teaser for Elko’s Basque Festival. Zorionak to everyone!

The Juaristi Scholarship Program awarded its 50th grant in the 2014 ceremony last week in Nevada

This program was created by Vince Juaristi, native to Elko (NV) and of Basque origin, in the year 2007 to help rural high school students of Elko and White Pine counties, in Nevada. “We give around eight scholarships every year,” told Juaristi to Euskalkultura.com.

The Txupinazo of San Fermin begins in the Diaspora: from Sao Firmino in Brazil to the “entzierroa” in London

London Basque Society's San Fermin event poster On Sunday July 6th, the city of Pamplona will become the center of attention for thousands, waiting for the txupinazo to kick-off the 2014 San Fermin festivities. Nevertheless, this year the Diaspora will beat Pamplona with various Basque clubs and centers around the world celebrating on Saturday. In London, for example, the London Basque Society already has everything ready to celebrate its “entzierroa.” Here are some of the San Fermin dates (Argentina’s will appear in a separate article tomorrow).
