Dancers from San Francisco spend two weeks in the Basque Country to practice dances and strengthen ties

The San Francisco Zazpiak Bat dance group members with their director Valerie Etcharren Arrechea (photo VEA-EuskalKultura.com) The Zazpiak Bat Dance Group from San Francisco, CA is immersed in a program to make connections with other dancers and dance groups from the Basque Country, as Valerie Etcharren Arrechea, dance director of this Californian group and president of NABO, told Euskalkultura.com. As part of that project, seven youngsters learning and practicing in Euskal Herria from the 21st of July to the 3rd of August.

Gaztemundu 2014: “The best dancers in the Diaspora are as good as those here; they have nothing to be jealous of”

Learning Ezpatadantza with Josu Garate and Oier Araolaza (photoDantzan.com) That is what Oier Araolaza said; he is a well-known dantzari and Basque dance expert who also served as this year’s Gaztemundu coordinator and instructor. “The level of the dantzaris in the Diaspora is like here; some are very good, others are average and some have a lower level. Exactly the same thing happens here among the various dance groups in Euskal Herria,” he said. This year, a selection of Basque dance instructors in the Diaspora participated in Gaztemundu where they were “inundated with information,” and classes during the two-week course.

Kantari Eguna is “another opportunity to keep our culture going,” says Noel Goyhenetche

Even though Kantari Eguna started out as a contest now it is an opportunity to share Basque songs with one another. Pictured singers Mikel Markez and Erramun and Solange Martikorena in their visit to Rocklin in 2010 Noel Goyhenetche, president of the Iparreko Ibarra Basque Club in Rocklin, California is “looking forward” to host their 3rd Kantari Eguna in October. “For us, holding the Kantari Eguna is another opportunity to keep our culture going,” he told Euskalkultura.com, after being asked why they decided to join forces with Mendiko Euskaldun Cluba in Gardnerville (NV) to host this event.

In 2015, Tokyo will join other cities in the world that offer Basque language and culture at the university level

Book about Euskal Herria, the Basques and their language and culture written in Japanese by Hagio Sho and Hironi Yoshida The University of Foreign Studies in Tokyo will sign an agreement with the Etxepare Institute to open a new Basque language and culture lectureship there in 2015. The university is committed to introduce studies in Basque language, culture, society and history at its School of International and Area Studies and at the School of Language and Culture Studies. In this way, Tokyo will soon be the 34th university in the world that offers this kind of studies, that reach 17 countries taught by 27 lecturers.

An English version of works by Wilhelm Von Humboldt on the Basque Country presented in Bilbao

The Bizkaian Deputy of Culture, Josune Ariztondo, and Joseba Zulaika professor at the Center for Basque Studies, along with Pello Salaburu, publisher of the work, presented the book in Bilbao on Wednesday. It includes some unedited works by the famous Prussian Bascologue.

Ann Erreca last Sunday in Gernika in front of the Tree of Gernika (photoEuskalKultura.com) Born in the rural California in Los Banos, in the middle of cowboy country, farms and ranches, Ann Erreca is a teacher, reading specialist, who works with kids with reading difficulties, something that 5% of the students in California face. But Ann Erreca is also a Californian Basque, third generation, who was raised and educated in California at the heart of a Basque family and the activities of the Los Banos Basque Club, where she has served as dance director for the last 20 years.

Euskera in Najera: a cultural association in the Rioja organizes a course for the second year in a row

Members of the cultural group with HABE's Kinku Zinkunegi, in front of where classes were taught last year Last year some twenty students participated, and this year there are many more interested. The curiosity about Euskera is creating an interesting movement in Najera, in the Spanish region of Rioja, where last year a group of neighbors organized Basque classes that were very well-received. The group is supported by the Laminiturri Basque club in Logroño, and this year the course will become part of HABE’s Euskara Munduan program. Classes will begin in October. If you are interested there is still time to enroll.

Euskara Munduan held its 2014 Winter Barnetegi and teacher training day in Chascomus

Participants at the 2014 Winter Barnetegi in Chascomus at the Basque club A group of 25 students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay have been in Chascomus since last Saturday participating in the Winter Barnetegi 2014, an intensive Euskara course that is part of the Euskara Munduan program supported by HABE. Organized by FEVA and the local Euskal Etxea, this fourth session will conclude Saturday at noon. As soon as the Barnetegi wraps up, teacher training will begin for teachers who are already in the program.

Boise to celebrate a “laid back” San Inazio as the community is also organizing next year’s Jaialdi

Last year's San Inazio festival brought a lot of people to Boise (Photo Boise Basque Club) “This year we are kind of having a very “lasai” (laid back, in Basque) festival because next year we have Jaialdi and it’s going to be crazy,” Annie Gavica, member of the board of directors of the Euzkaldunak Basque Club from Boise (ID), told Euskalkultura.com. Regardless, this won’t keep the city from enjoying “sports, cultural events, good food, drinks, and a friendly atmosphere,” as she pointed out.

Oiarzabal) Nathalie Urroz is a 23-years-old San Francisco, CA native that has just participated in one of the “Memoria Bizia” (Living Memory) workshops, taught by Dr. Pedro J. Oiarzabal in San Francisco. She believes it is “very good for younger generations to get to know what older generations have to say” and “totally” encourages other Basque-Americans to attend a workshop that might be organized in their area.
