The Basque Government has published several changes to the Basque Clubs grant decree

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country published yesterday a decree by the Lehendakari that changes several parts of the Basque Clubs grant decree. The changes aim to provide, among other objectives, a better determination of the selection and valoration criteria for the grants. This publication is a previous step to the publication of the call for the 2014 grants, that is expected in the next weeks.

Christian Etxeberria, medical technician and Basque language student/teacher in Santiago, Chile

Christian is very happy in his profession.  He spends the day among x-rays and bone scintigraphs, as a medical technologist, as his specialty is called in Chile.  His work consists of, performing tests, mostly on women, to determine their cancer status.  Basque is another source of satisfaction for him.

Marian Fernandez Castelli gave a Basque Culture Workshop at the Gure Txokoa Basque club in Azul

Invited by the Gure Txokoa in Azul, Professor Mariana Fernandez Castelli gave a workshop at this Basque association in the Argentinean province of Buenos Aires.  The program covered a wide range of topics, from pre-history to current-day Euskal Herria, in an intensive class.  Along with this news, the Basque club in Azul also invites everyone to participate in the mateada on Spring Day that will take place this Sunday.

Basque-Californian sociologist and anthropologist Begoña Echeverria has published many academic articles in fields such as sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and historical linguistics. Her last article “compares the very different representations of witches in 17th century inquisitor reports and in Basque traditional songs,” she tells EuskalKultura.com. But, apparently, she had more to say about witches, considering the fact that she wrote her first novel on the same topic.

As part of its 75th Anniversary, the Lagun Onak will give two Basque repertoire concerts in September

Lagun Onak at its concert at the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament

The Lagun Onak Choral Association of Buenos Aires will return to the stage this month and will do it with two Basque music concerts.  The first function will take place on Sunday the 21st in the “La Usina del Arte” Cultural Center in the La Boca neighborhood, while the second will take place on Thursday the 25th, in the chapel of the Euskal Echea School.  Both presentations are part of the choir’s 75th Anniversary program and admission is free and open to the public.

Bizkaia:talent will hold a networking meeting with Basque companies and highly qualified professionals this Saturday in London

The Province Government of Biscay, through its organization Bizkaia:talent, has organized a networking meeting in London, aiming to connect 12 Basque leading companies with 85 highly qualified professionals currently residing in the UK. The goal of the meeting is to show those professionals career opportunities in the Basque Country and thus attract talent to Basque companies. Most of the participants are in fact Basque citizens working in the British Isles.

Diego Moreira, genealogist: “In Brazil we researched the Larrabeitis, Escosteguys... and we want to continue”

At the Rio Grande do Sul Basque club, in the south of Brazil, a small group of genealogists are working on an ambitious project: research and publish the genealogy of the Basque families in the country.  Diego Moreira Larrabeiti, is directing the project along with Elimar Insaurriaga, and talked to EuskalKultura.com about his passion for this world of family and personal discovery and also about the fact that in spite of the historic Basque presence in the country, many Brazilians don’t know about their Basque origins. “Until 2012, I didn’t even know that Basque clubs existed.  Today, I have participated in the foundation of one of them,” he says.

A conference on Basque sheepherders will kick off the 118th year of the Leisure Hour Club, in Carson City

Iker Saitua is also the organizer of a set of conferences on Basque topics held by UNR

Iker Saitua, a PhD student at the UNR, will be the first speaker of this year’s Leisure Hour Club’s (LHC) program. A native of Getxo (Bizkaia, Basque Country), the historian will offer a glimpse into the past with a talk about Basque sheep breeders in Nevada, from the late nineteenth century to the 1960’s. “We like to know more about the history of Nevada and this is going to be a great opportunity,” told Dorothy Link, member of the LHC, to Euskalkultura.com. The presentation will be tomorrow evening at the Carson City Nugget Casino, just for members of the club.

The Denak Bat in Mendoza celebrated its anniversary with dinner prepared by the Goierri Gastronomic Society in La Plata

Cesar Arrondo gave a talk at Mendoza’s Denak Bat on the club’s 58th Anniversary

The Mendoza Basque Club celebrated its 58th birthday with a visit from members of the Goierri Gastronomic Society opf La Plata.  The event began with a talk by Professor Cesar Arrondo and continued with dinner that the cooks in the group prepared especially for their hosts.  The program of events organized by Denak Bat will continue over the coming weeks with a free film series that will be held in September and October and a Tea-Bingo that will take place at the clubhouse this Saturday.

They are looking for different profiles to fit in several tasks (continuing education, university classes, mintza-praktika). On the other hand, Euskara.it also is looking for a person to coordinate its website and the communication of the Basque courses organized by ACE (Associazione Culturale Euskara), the Department of the Basque UPTER (Università Popolare di Roma) and University Rome3.
