The Basque-Argentine Diaspora is getting ready once again for its huge annual festival that will take place this year in La Plata from November 1-9.  The provisional festival program, that EuskalKultura.com was able to access, promises an intense week with a variety of activities that will include dances, evenings, talks and activities from Euskera to the new Agro-Industrial Exhibit.

Sunday, October the 19th will be picnic day for all the members and friends of the Lagun Onak Basque Club of Las Vegas, Nevada. “We’re a small club and the picnic is very humble but we have so much fun,” Beristain tells Euskalkultura.com. The picnic will be hold at the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park with easy ingredients: Basque music, food and drink, dances, mus... and good old and new friends and a great atmosphere!

The French Basque Club in Buenos Aires, or the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea, its increasingly more often used name, held its annual assembly, where the board of directors was renewed.  In this new exercise, Ernesto Cornejo Saravia, will continue as president, accompanied among others by Cesar Arrondo (vice-president); Norma Rios (secretary); Juan Carlos Ibarrola, (pro-secretary), Carlos Martinez (treasurer) and Manual Azpiroz (pro-treasurer).

Roberto Guerenabarrena, former president of the NEBC: “We have to show Euskara to non-Basque people”

There was important news in the last bulletin from the New England Basque Club: Sergio Sotelo will be the new president, after Roberto Guerenabarrenarena decided to step down as the head of the organization. The retired pilotari has been the president since the creation of the club in 2004, and as he told Euskalkultura.com, “now it’s time for new people to get in.”

The Euskal Etxea in Rio Grande do Sul held elections and announced its first Basque meeting in Uruguayana

In its three years of life the Euskal Etxea in Rio Grande do Sul has begun an interesting movement to recuperate the Basque culture in the South of Brazil.  Now, the entity has renewed its board of directors, to continue working on this goal. They have also announced a new activity on October 4th, the First Basque Meeting at the Western Border, aimed especially for Basque descendants from Uruguayana.  The cultural program will include a performance by dancers from the renowned Argentine dance group of the Urrundik Basque club in Parana.

For the third year in a row, professors from the Basque University in Buenos Aires association gave a series of talks on various themes linked to the Basque Country at the city’s Directorate of Culture invited by the Secretary of Culture, Education and Communication, of the municipality of Gral. Madariaga.  The event had great impact and promises to become an annual event.

“It is not a documentary about Basque dances, it is a fiction movie without dialogue − the story will be told through dance,” Telmo Esnal, filmmaker from Zarautz, Gipuzkoa told Euskalkultura.com. Sculptor Koldobika Jauregi and dance expert Juan Antonio Urbeltz are also working with him on the project titled,  ‘Dantza,’  and they hope that it will be in theaters by 2016.

Join "Basque Stories from the South" and tell the world what it means to be Basque in South America

"Bertsolaris that sing their bertsos via Twitter, Facebook or Internet", that's how 'Basque Stories from the South' defines itself and presents its project. This trans-media proposal hopes to gather testimonies by Basques in the Diaspora and to support their diffusion on various media. Afterwards, these stories will be collected in an exhibit to be displayed next November in Argentina at the National Basque Week in La Plata.  The deadline to submit your story is October 15th.  We spoke with Paula Almiron-Chamadoira, project promoter, who told us what exactly these trans-media stories are (their website is bilingual, Basque and Spanish, with many mistakes in the Basque version).

Boise’ko Euskal Etxea to ‘become’ a sagardotegi, or Basque cider house, in support of the Oinkari dancers

2014's one will be the 3rd Sagardotegi or ciderhouse edition organized by Oinkari in Boise as a fundraiser for its activities

On Saturday October 18th, the Basque Center from Boise, Idaho will turn into a cider house to raise funds for their dancers. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards transportation costs and lodging for the Oinkaris, who are hoping to perform at the 2015 Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, Washington. “It will be a unique opportunity for us to perform in front of an audience that might not be familiar with Basque culture,” Oinkari president Lael Uberuaga told Euskalkultura.com.
