Pablo Ubierna is a doctor of History. Born in Buenos Aires 48 years ago, he is employed as a researcher at the Argentine National Council of Scientific Research. Basque pelota is his other passion and he recently returned from the World Cup after reaching the podium.

While enjoying the success of the Festival of Basque Dance that took place in mid-September in Parana, the Association Urrundik of this Argentine city is now getting ready to participate on October 4th in the First Basque Meeting on the West Gaucha Border, in Uruguayana, Brazil. After this event, Urrundik will then concentrate on Semana Vasca, where they will also be with a delegation of more than 40 members.

The Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque club in Arrecifes is getting ready for this Sunday October 5th when it will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Itxarkundia, the club’s first dance group, and the first 25 years of Ugarritzak, the group that replaced the former. The celebration will gather dantzaris of all ages at a big luncheon. Along with this invitation from the club they also let us know about the Choral Gathering organized in September by its choir Iruki Alaiak.

On September 21st the Euskal Etxea in Bordeaux organized various activities as part of Heritage Day. Club members were very happy with the response by the locals at their music and dance workshops, and at the choirs by the Bestalariak and Aizkoa choirs, as well as by the great atmosphere during the public dance at the Place des Basque, with music provided by Txanbelatxoa and other spontaneous performers who sang bertsos. Also worth mentioning, is the surprise that club members received when they were unexpectedly visited by six music bands from Euskal Herria.

Invited by the Beti Dantzari Basque group, 75 children from the Union Vasca Basque club in Bahia Blanca; Hiru Erreka in Tres Arroyos; and the local Eusko Biltzar Basque club participated in the second edition of the Txikis Get-Together in Coronel Pringles. For two days, there were games, music and dances and as a novelty, a sleep over at the Basque club.

The incomparable setting of the annual sheep trailing in Bardenas brought back memories for many of the members of Euskal Artzainak Ameriketan, that were reminded of their time spent in the mountains and pastures in the US taking care of sheep. The association chose this day to celebrate its annual festival that gathered more than 400 people who enjoyed the beautiful images of the sheep coming into the Bardenas desert, as well as the meal that followed. Herder, Jose Aguas, was very excited and nervous about firing the shot to start the trial for the last time.

Daughter of a father from Donostia and a mother from Osintxu in Bergara, Arrate Coscojuela Zanguitu is a Basque-Venezuelan that we found in Naguanagua, a town two hours out of Caracas that celebrated in August the Feast of its local patron saint, the Virgin of Begoña, as it has done since 1782.

The 2014 edition of the Bernardo Atxaga Chair, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute at the City University of New York (CUNY) will begin next Monday. This year the chair will focus on the most recent Basque literature from the 80s to the present, thanks to Professors Nerea Arruti and Mari Jose Olaziregi. In addition, this cycle will be complemented with concerts by Ruper Ordorika, accompanied by Ben Monder, and Josu Okiñena.

They are fluent Basque speakers and studied by themselves, never went to the Basque Country or have any family conexion there. Jose Miguel Ramírez Giraldo was the first, from Pereira, Colombia. He started uploading videos speaking in different languages. In one of those, Maria Spantidi, native of Athens, Greece saw him speaking in Basque and she decided to respond to him also in Basque with another video. Jose Miguel’s videos have been viewed around 7,000 times. Maria’s first and only one, more than 15,000 times. Both of them talked to Euskalkultura.com.

The Agro-Industrial Exhibition is the result of an agreement between the City of La Plata, the Basque club and the Argentine Industrial Union of Gran La Plata that will take place on November 7-9th in at the Republica de los Niños fairgrounds. It will include Basque and local exhibits and will gather authorities of the CAV from Navarre and the Department of the Atlantic Pyrenees. While the final details are to be determined the Basque club invites everyone to participate with an ad in the magazine “Hargatik.”
