Basque interest grows in Brazil, driven by the First Meeting of Basque Descendants in Uruguaiana

On October 4th, the Brazilean Rio Grande do Sul Basque Club held a meeting in the city of Uruguaiana, situated on the border between Brazil and Argentina, very close to Uruguay.  The goal was to acquaint the local community with Basque culture, especially those Brazilians who are not aware of their Basque heritage.  The meeting concluded with notable success, as demonstrated by the existence and work of a group of Basques involved in the development of the club and its activities at the core of Uruguaiana.

The number of mus players in San Francisco is growing thanks to a program hosted by the Cultural Center

The San Francisco Basque Cultural Center hosted, in September, another mus workshop for beginners. “There are people that didn’t have the opportunity to learn when they were younger but want to be part of the games,” Valerie Arrechea, president of NABO, told Euskalkultura.com. This year, though, they decided to hold classes for five months, until the NABO mus tournament starts.

The hotel Euskaldunberri is located in the Argentine city of San Martin de los Andes in the southern mountains, surrounded by a rural green landscape that combines snow covered peaks with the intense blue of the Lacar River and the beige of its welcoming beaches. Gustavo Iturralde, a Basque-Argentine with Navarrese great-grandparents and grandparents that left their country at the end of the 19th century, owns the place.

Kantari Eguna 2014 next Saturday in Licoln, CA together with the tenth anniversary of Iparreko Ibarra

Next Saturday the Iparreko Ibarra Basque Club of Rocklin, California will host 2014's Kantari Eguna and NABO fall meeting, while celebrating its 10th anniversary. Noel Goyhenetche, president of the euskal etxea, said to EuskalKultura.com that they are “a small club but I’d say most members are young and we also have a kid’s dance group, and that’s the future.”

A Basque delegation participated in the European Migrations Institution Forum in Riga, Estonia

The 2014 Conference of the Association of European Migration Institutions (AEMI) the main forum for the study of European migration throughout history, took place on September 25 in Riga, Latvia. The event was attended by a Basque delegation led by the Director of the Basque Community Abroad, Asier Vallejo Itsaso.  During the meeting the Basque group presented a paper by researchers Xabier Irujo (Associate Professor that the University of Nevada) and Susana Sabin-Fernandez (independent research from the UK) on Basque children of the Civil war entitled “Have to Little Basque Refugees.”

Travel preparations to Boise have begun: hundreds of European Basques have already signed up to travel to Jaialdi 2015

In July 2015 Basques from all over the US will gather at Jaialdi in Boise, a large Basque festival that gathers the US Basque community once every five years.  Even Basques in the Basque Country have begun making their travel plans, and seats are already filling up.  The Overtrails Agency in Pamplona already has more than 200 confirmed passengers on the four trips that it is offering.  The first is a trip just to Jaialdi, in Boise, other one also includes a stop in NY.  The third will visit Boise, Utah, the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas, with the fourth along with Basque sheepherders who used to work in the US, will include a very special guide, Julian Iantzi, TV host in the Basque Country, son of one of these herders, and who was born in the US.

Ignacio Baña Barquin: "Triki can change your mood and may even lead you to dance, I like that"

Even though he is a member of a historic family in Laurak Bat, Ignacio Baña Barquin has created his own link to the institution he entered as a child, first as a dancer and later as a musician.  Trikitilari (trikitixa player) and violinist, Ignacio dreams of being able to play once with those that he considers his referents, artists like Kepa Junkera, Joseba Tapia or Iker Goenaga.  In the meantime, at his 22 years of age, he is progressing on his Architect degree at the University of Buenos Aires, and spends his time between demos and rehearsals.

Juantxo Skalari’s international tour that includes stops in Italy, Peru and Chile begins in Switzerland today

Basque musician Juantxo Skalari and his group the Rude Band will begin its international tour today, #Rudestation Tour, in Lucerne Switzerland.  The singer from Navarre is presenting his latest work on the tour “Rude Station,” recorded with his audience’s support through a crowdfunding campaign.  The group is on the road and will present its new songs in Lucerne, Switzerland.  The tour will then continue with concerts in Italy, Peru and Chile.

The translation of Linguae Vasconum Primitiae into Japanese will be published by Tokyo Heibonsha Publishing

Sho Hagio is a member of the Tokioko Euskal Etxea, Tokyo Basque Club as well as its delegate

The translation of Bernard Etxepare’s Linguae Vasconum Primitiae into Japanese will be published in December by Tokyo’s Heibonsha Publishing.  The translators were Sho Hagio and Hiromi Yoshida who worked from the original Basque text.  On another note, Sho Hagio, Japanese Basque professor, will also give two presentations this month entitled, “Euskal lurra, jendea eta hizkuntza,” (Basque Land, People, and Language). The first one will take place at the Asahi Culture Center in Osaka this Saturday, and the second on October 21st in Tokyo

The Zelaiko Euskal Etxea in Santa Rosa, La Pampa, celebrated its 22nd anniversary presenting its Children’s Choir

The Children’s Choir from the Zelaiko Euskal Etxea in Santa Rosa, made its debut at the club’s 22nd Anniversary

The Santa Rosa Basque club in the capital city of the Argentine province of La Pampa, celebrated another birthday and did so remembering its History but also by looking to the future.  At a lunch that gathered 50 people, members of the Zelaiko Euskal Etxea planted a Calden tree, typical of the area, and presented its Children’s choir that is formed by club members’ grandchildren.
