Amy Arnold and Étienne Trépanier got to know the Basque culture on a trip to Newfoundland, Canada; a plan that led the couple to start a project about the Basque Country. “I am aware of national identities and, since I’m Québécois, I could relate to certain aspects of the Basque culture so we decided to start working on this,” Trépanier told EuskalKultura.com. Their website brings a new opportunity to discover online the homeland of the Basques, in English or French.

The Federation of Basque Institutions in Uruguay (FIVU) held its annual Udaleku on September 26-28, with spring like weather with variations in temperature, wind and rain. The camp was attended by 28 participants, leaders and adults that celebrated this event at the Municipal Camp in Kiyu, in the department of San Jose.

Founded in November of 1951, the Lagun Onak Basque club in Pergamino, in the province of Buenos Aires, celebrated its 63rd anniversary, in advance, with a big dinner for nearly one hundred people. The event was also attended by representatives from the Guillermo Larregui Basque club in Chacabuco and from Euskaldunak Denak Bat, in Arrecifes, the club that sponsored the club in its beginning and who still accompanies it today at a large number of its activities.

The eight youth, from the Basque Country, who participated in the Hator Hona 2014 program, reflected on their experience and what these three weeks of living with girls and boys in Necochea meant to them. “It was a blast,” “Great,” “The best experience of my life,”…are some of the expressions that describe their stay. Participants were: Xabier Urtasun, Itxaso Saenz de Lafuente, Izaro Intsausti, Xabier Maritxalar, Uxue Etxebeste, Nekane Agirre, Beñat Konde, Eñaut Arretxe and Olatz Mitxelena.

The festivities consisted of a dinner that gathered founding members, new friends of the club and the Basque community in Villa Maria that have accompanied the club since its beginning. The dinner was part of the extensive program of activities that Gure Ametza has carried out during this anniversary year and that will conclude on December 12th with a Taberna for International Day of Euskera.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country has published the names of those who received scholarships for specialization in Basque Communities and clubs by the Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad, as part of the Secretary General of Foreign Action in the Lehendakaritza or the President of the Basque Government. Two of them will work in the aforementioned office, while the other two will work in the Delegations of Euskadi in Argentina, and the United States respectively.

‘Spanish affair’ –originally, ‘8 apellidos vascos’− is a successful comedy that made really good in the Basque Country and Spain since it was launched, on March the 14th, and will also be the first movie to be shown at the Basque film series organized by Zazpiak Bat Basque Club of British Columbia, Canada. November 14 will be the first of three 'Basque movies nights' that, besides this comedy, also includes ‘Happy New Year, grandma!’ and ‘Obaba’. “It is a humble program but it’s a nice excuse to gather together and to see Basque movies with friends,” told Elena Sommer, president of the club, to EuskalKultura.com.

The Parc de L’aventure Basque en Amérique, the interpretation center of Basque history located in northerrn Quebec, will celebrate Halloween tomorrow, November 1st. It will be the first event after a “very good summer,” as Mélanie Paquet, director of the center, tells EuskalKultura.com. Along with this family-style All Hallows’ Day, they museum will also celebrate the fourth ‘Carnaval pistoneige,’ in February, and will receive students from different schools of the region all through the year.
