New England Basque Club moved its Basque language classes from Portsmouth to Boston – “It’s a step forward,” organizer Gorka Ochoa told Euskalkultura.com. “There are more people here and the age difference among the students is not that big.” Twelve students have started the course: six intermediates that will learn the language with Ochoa and another six beginners that will be taught by Idaho native Kattalina Berriochoa.

The cultural stand was open to the public every day during the Fair and became a true point of attraction for those who wanted to find out about the origin of their last name and the location of the villages they come from on a map of Euskal Herria. Among the visitors greeted by Ongi Etorri was Argentine writer Sylvia Iparraguirre, who autographed and gifted a book to the institution.

Full of energy, Twin Falls, Idaho native, Sue Legarreta, answers the phone to talk to Euskalkultura.com about her last project: ‘Legarreta Storybook – Family Cookbook.’ Published in a booklet format, it contains 300 plus recipes she gathered through her 68 years of life. “I love cooking, it’s my passion. The only thing I love more than cooking is my family,” she admits.

Loyal to its tradition, the Basque club in the Argentine city of Laprida accompanied the local community in various celebrations that took place in September. It was present at the event and parade marking the 125th anniversary of Laprida; and it contribuited with its dantzaris and the main speaker to the 1st Regional Meeting of Communities. Along with this news, the Basque club also announced that it will name its library after Magdalena Moujan Otaño at an event that will take place on December 7th.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country was published today complete with the official call for Basque club 2014 grants. The period for application opens tomorrow. This year, the total allotted to these grants is 782.307 Euros. The deadline to apply is November 10.

The La Plata Basque club has published the last version of the program for the Semana Nacional Vasca Argentina 2014 that will take place November 1-9 in the capital of the province of Buenos Aires. The novelties are significant; the Agro-Industrial Expo is being modified, and has become a Tribute to Basque Work including the Annual Dinner of the Argentine Industrial Union of the Greater La Plata. On the music front, a concert by Itziarren Semeak from Bizkaia has been confirmed. To facilitate the information, the club has also presented a completely renovated website.

Not just in the academic world, Boise native John Ysursa is also an active person in the Basque communities. Yesterday he gave a talk on the origins of Basque dances, at the city’s Euskal Etxea. He talked to Euskalkultura.com about the symposium that Basque Studies at BSU is organizing for next year’s Jaialdi and about the reality of Basque-American communities.

For two days the architectural museum Poble Espanyol, located in Montjuic, will become a small piece of the Basque Country, thanks to the “Euskal Herria to Barcelona” Cultural Festival. The largest part of this open air museum will be the center of the activities with a complete program that includes food, workshops, tourist information, dance performances, rural sports and concerts….For all ages thanks to the Euskal Etxea in Barcelona.

She travelled to Germany for the first time in the early 90s when she was barely 20, to improve her German. Her life changed in Berlin, where she met who is her partner today, and she has resided ever since in the German capital. She is the president of the Berlin Basque club.

The idea emerged from a small group of descendants of Basque immigrants and immediately caught on in this town in Patagonia located on the Argentinean side of the Andes Mountains, at the mouth of the Lacar Lake. The initiative is only four months old, but in that time, the group called named their group Euskal Txokoa, also started dance classes, and has appointed a board of directors. They hope to soon become the first Basque club in the province of Neuquen .
