Next August, a group of rowers from Iparralde, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia will travel to Newfoundland to participate in the Ternua 2017 expedition. Members of the expedition will leave from Placentia and will travel 400 kilometers to the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. There they will join in on the Zazpiak Bat Basque Club’s festival.

On the 80th anniversary of the Basque Government and the election of Jose Antonio Agirre as the first Lehendakari, the “Agirre Lehendakaria” group has launched the “Gabon” initiative to commemorate the end of year messages that Lehendakari Agirre used to send to Basques in Euskal Herria and the Diaspora. They are inviting everyone to record a short Christmas message and send it by December 10th. All of the greetings received will be compiled into a video that will be broadcast on December 13th. It will be available via streaming all over the world.

The spirit of auzolan, community work, has no boundaries, as was shown at a Txitxiburduntzi in Lendelede (Belgium), to support the renovation of the 400 year old Baserri in Bedarona, Bizkaia. The event included the participation of the Txalaparta Choir from the Brussels Euskal Etxea, and the money raised is for renovating Olabe’s roof, a baserri who new owners wish to convert it into a place for cultural encounters.

Only a month left until the end of the year, and so Basque clubs in Argentina have already started preparing their 2017 calendars. Chascomus will be the site for Udaleku Summer Camp January 3-7, organized by the Zingirako Euskaldunak. Deadline to enroll is December 10th. The Dantzari Get-Together in Cañuelas will be held on Aberri Eguna, April 8-9th.

One of the four victims who died last Friday when the air ambulance she was traveling in crashed shortly after takeoff from the Elko, NV Airport. Tiffany Urresti, was 29 and used to be a member of the Elko Fire Department as well as part of the local Basque community. She also had been a dantzari in the Arinak Dancers in Elko, as well as a member of the local Basque club and a member of a well-known Basque family that includes former NABO president Mary (Urresti) Gaztambide. We would like to express our sincere condolences to the members of the Urresti, Gaztambide, and Cassingham families.

The Basque Book and Album Fair in Durango will recognize groundwork done over the years by hundreds or thousands of anonymous Euskaltzales and will award the prestigious Argizaiola Award to six people, including Jose Ramon Zengotitabengoa, who will receive it representing the Diaspora. Zengotitabengoa has carried out his work through the Society of Basque Studies in America. Zorionak to him and to all of the awardees.

The Associazione Culturale Euskara Basque Club in Rome begins its Basque Film Series today with Lasa eta Zabala by Pablo Malo. On the 25th Loreak by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga will be shown, returning after having great success at Basque Week 2015. The series will close on the 26th with some short films from Laburbira.

Anyone who had the chance to be in Necochea last weekend, experienced some very intense days, full of activities and excitement. But the weekend came to an end on Sunday, and after lunch we had to say goodbye. The delegations left the Euzko Etxea, but not really wanting to. What is now for sure, is that they will have another chance to gather, next year, November 10-12, in San Nicolas. The last installment of Semana Nacional Vasca Argentina 2016.
