The story of the day comes from Argentina, where it lookslike President Mauricio Macri, had a bad time to pronounce the name of the place in Entre Rios where he was participating in a event because it is of Basque origin: Urdinarrain. “These Basques come to complicate our life,” Macri said jokingly, trying to get out of the way.

Since we are reluctant to talk about ourselves, it is not usual to publish news about us, but in this penultimate week of the year, EuskalKultura.com will publish three installments about its activity. The first of these follows and is an adaptation of an interview with our director that was published in the Hargatik Newsletter of the La Plata Basque Club in Argentina, where we succinctly explain our goal and the coordinates of the work that we do.

As 2016 is winding up, we at EuskalKultura.com are remembering the hundreds of articles and photographs published and that have passed through our hands. Hundreds of stories of the Basques in the world that we shared. 2016 leaves many experiences and images and we want to gather some of them in this review. The idea came from Olga Leiciaga, when she began putting together the history of her family, decided to invite people who had one of her four last names: Elordi-Aguirre on her mother’s side and Leiciaga-Arrospide on her father’s. The invitation was very well received and some 70 people gathered at the Itxaropen Basque Club in Saladillo to participate in the reunion. There, Leiciaga presented information on the family that she had gathered in Argentina as well as in the Basque Country on her recent trip there.

It will allow a new way of connection to more than 8,000 people that have gone through the International Institute of Legal Sociology (IISJ) in Oñati in its 27 years of existence. It builds new bridges and can share projects, ideas and social-legal achievements. This is the goal so the digital platform “Oñati Community Association,” that the IISJ has just launched. Do you want to sing traditional Christmas Carols in Basque this year with your family? Would you like to sing songs in Basque, but you don’t know how to speak it? The Txantxangorria.eus website provides more than 1,700 videos of Basque karaoke, with lyrics so that you can sing them. And at the same time, learn and practice Euskera. In the end, that was the idea of its creator, Gabi de la Maza, when he began the project.

The Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo has published its own 2017 calendar. To do so, they organized a photo contest called “Nossa Euskal Herria – Our Euskal Herria,” collecting various Basque images that gave rise to the calendar, “the first bilingual one in Basque and Portuguese,” club president, Pilar Garcia Alava said. “Anyone who wishes, may get one online, and have this small jewel as well as support the oldest Basque club in Brazil (1959).”

The project included a group of students from the Donostei School in Baigorri (Behe Nafarroa). It took three years of planning to organize an "unforgettable" trip that lasted just more than two weeks to California and Nevada, following the steps of Basque emigration. The students were able to get to know and get a taste for “the America of the Basques,” and this is exactly the experience that is told in this following story, in the first person, that we are sharing along with weekly Herria in Baiona.
