Several Basque activities have taken place in Montevideo at he end of this year, thanks to FIVU and the Euskaro, Euskal Erria and Haize Hegoa Basque Clubs in the Uruguayan capital. There were several tributes, events and talks recalling the arrival 75 years ago, of Lehendakari Agirre to Uruguay, after his scape from a Nazi-occupied Europe. On the other hand, at the beginning of the month there were International Day of Euskera celebrations. Following a chronicle of the events and a photo gallery.

The Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno has created an exhibit about Bertsolaritza, the art of singing improvised verses in Basque that includes photos, texts, and a documentary on the subject by director, Asier Altuna. The exhibit will be available through April, and was designed by Iñaki Arrieta Baro and Shannon Sisco as part of the Kulturartea project.

In dancing, food and even soccer there has been Basque activities in Comodoro. The Euskal Echea Association, founded in 1923, ended an excellent year with a massive and fun dinner. There was great participation of the club’s youth, a fundamental pillar of the institution. Not only did they help with the cooking, but they also entertained at the event with tier dances, and were even honored for their excellent showing on the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the local Tournament of the Federation of Foreign Communities.

Exactly what you will do if you win one of the prizes. And being six of them, the possibilities are that much greater. This time they are: two calendars (One from NABO and the classic Arantzazu 'tako'), a book-CD (about Manex Pagola, the author of songs like “Urtxintxak oihanean,” with text and recordings,) a book Euskera for Spanish Speakers, because laguages aren’t that different among them, and two CDs “Herri Miña, Songs of Being Far Away and Return,” for those in the Diaspora who are nostalgic; and “Bidarte,” by Patxi eta Konpania, essential for Basque circle dances.

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the first Basque Government, EiTB has launched the campaign “Portrait of Who We Are,” to recall the figure and values of the first Lehendakari, Jose Antonio Agirre. As part of this project, the documentary Orain 80 urte (80 Years Ago) is a tribute to these 80 years from the perspective of the Diaspora presented by the Patagonian Basque Rocio Basterra, a referent in the Basque Diaspora in Argentina, with a long career in teaching Basque language and culture. The show will begin at 7:30pm (15:30 in Argentina) and can be seen on line.

On December 5, the Euskal Etxea in Bristol England celebrated its first anniversary. Its members and friends celebrate with a birthday dinner, finishing off its first 12 months in style that were “very intense and full of activities” as they told EuskalKultura.com. Now, the young Basque club has taken a few weeks off to celebrate Christmas to return in the new year with more energy.

Elkoan accordionist Mercedes Mendive along with Janet Iribarne, are driving the Ariñak Project, a program that seeks to teach Basque culture to the dantzaris at the Elko Basque Club, always starting from dance, but expanding its scope to other aspects such as Basque language and music.

Directed by maestro Martin Tumbarino, the Gure Abestiak Choir, representative of the Gure Etxea Basque Club in Tandil in the music arena, has had a wonderful year-end. Over the last few months, they organized the 14th Choir Gathering, toured the south of Argentina and performed at the club’s anniversary festivities. For those who haven’t yet heard them, they have one more performance. Their Christmas concert will be held on December 17th at Our Lady of Begoña Church in Tandil.

The new structure and organization of the Basque Government is being clarified, little by little, in this new legislature. In regards to the Secretary General of Foreign Action, that includes the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad, on which the policy in relation to Basque clubs depends, Lehendakari Urkullu has opted to continue with the incumbent, Marian Elorza from Zumarraga at its head.
