Last Wednesday, April 8, Manuel Aldecoa was awarded with seven Honor Medals, by Senator Mike Crapo, from Idaho. It was Thanksgiving Day, in 1943, when Aldecoa died, air-fighting. 72 years after that, his family attended this ceremony, thanks to Manuel’s niece-in-law Dolores Totoricaguena’s research and paper-work. Around 60 people gathered at the homage, among them Manuel’s sisters Benedicta (96) and Delphine (93); more than twenty other family members; representatives of the Bizkaia Government Imanol Pradales eta Gabino Martínez de Arenaza; and KTVB channel’s journalists. “We’re very proud,” said Delphine to EuskalKultura.com.

For the third year in a row, the Public Library Domingo F. Sarmiento in San Miguel will be the site of the Touring Basque Film Series organized by Askatasunaren Bidea. The first event will take place tomorrow, April 11, at 6:30pm, with Ocho apellidos vascos (Eight Basque Last Names). The group has also informed EuskalKultura.com that its Euskera workshop will begin this month.

It is official: Athletic Club will play the Basque Soccer Friendly, on July 29th, in Boise, Idaho. Yesterday, at a press conference held at the city’s Basque Center, organizers announced that the Basque team will play against Mexico’s Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente, better known as ‘The Xolos.’ “We’re very excited and we know that Athletic will be playing with its home colors, red and white,” said Argia Beristain, spokeswoman, to EuskalKultura.com. The organizing committee is planning to go to Tijuana, Mexico during this month while three journalist of KTVB will head the Basque Country, in order to film some videos for the American audience.

The organizing Basque club, Euzko Alkartasuna in Macachin, made it public yesterday through FEVA. The possibility of having a runoff in the presidential elections forced the change of the date. So the new the new dates are October 26-November 1.

Argentinean Alejo Conti heard the Basque language for the first time on a trip he made to Malaga, Spain from the mouths of some Basque girls he met there. When he returned to his home town of Rosario, he contacted the local Basque club, begun learning Basque, and in just a few years became a Basque teacher. Traditionally Basques consider Euskalduna (Basque) to people that learn their language. He started this week his second course teaching the language at the National University in Rosario.

Aberri Eguna was celebrated last Sunday in the Basque Country and in various parts of the Diaspora, like Havana, Caracas, Sydney, New York and Miami among others. The celebration has a long tradition among Basques around the world, and this weekend it will be celebrated in Santiago, Chile, Montreal, Las Vegas and in Argentina in Olavarria, Villa Maria and Cordoba, among others. On April 17, one of the last event will take place in Rio Cuarto, Argentina. Following are photos and videos of what has taken place up in some of them to now.

The first concert of the year organized by the Euskal Echea College will take place this afternoon at the Chapel on Sarandi Street in Buenos Aires. Concerts take place once a month and gather musicians from various areas that play a great variety of repertoires. Today’s concert, at 7pm, is by Fernando Ciancio on the trumpet and Enrique Rimoldi on the organ. Admission is free and open to the public.

The invitation of the Euzko Etxea in Necochea, Argentina through the Hator Hona program is aimed at young Basques -- from the Basque Country, but also, why not, from the US or other countries in the Diaspora -- who want to spend three weeks in Necochea and share their knowledge of the Basque culture, language, music, sports, and gastronomy there. Hator Hona will take place this year from July 17-August 9 and will include something new: including youth with experience in basketball. Think on it!

Last year, Basque Films Series, a movie-program hosted in San Francisco by the Basque Educational Organization (BEO), turned 10. And in spite of the fact that person in charge Philippe Acheritogaray first organized it as a one-time event, nowadays the Basque Cultural Center hosts two programs a year, in Spring and Autumn. Acheritogaray chooses the films but, since a couple of years ago, he invites presenters to introduce them: Pedro Oiarzabal, Xabier Irujo, Oscar Alvarez, Emily Lobsenz, Marcia Barinaga… are some of who already did. Currently, the introduction speeches are being given by Aitor Iñarra, coordinator of NABO’s Euskara program, along with Itxaso Cayero.

Activities continue at the Casa Basco-Brasileira in Sao Paulo that recently participated in the debut of Morra.com an independent film directed by club member Valter Lopes, who also included other members in the project: Pedro Duarte and Sonia Ferreira. In other news, another group of Basque students has recently started taking Basque classes.
