After years of citizens defending the rescue and rehabilitation of this historic fronton located in the heart of Madrid, steps away from the Paseo de la Castellana, the city of Madrid has finally become the owner of the property after a process of expropriation and payment of 7 million euros, compared to the twelve requested by its current owners. Around 2,400 people took part in the 38th Race to Robie Creek, on April 18. Through the years, the event has become a social gathering more than just an only-for-pros sport competition, even though it is, still “the toughest race in the Northwest,” as labeled by the organizers. This year’s edition celebrated all things Basque and the Basque community aided in the organization “even more than in previous years,” said Brian Rencher, member of the committee, to EuskalKultura.com.

“Pilpileando” aims to bring Basque cuisine to more and more people, but that is not its only objective. Food has become an excellent excuse to call for the solidarity of the Basques and their capacity to help those in need. Itziar Aguirre presents the provisional program of this year’s tour and asks participating Basque clubs to organize the master classes in public places, and make them open to the public.

Seventy-eight years after the tragic attack by the Nazis on the Bizkaian village, the Bombing of Gernika still lives in the memory of many Basques, particularly in the Diaspora where some of the last survivors reside. Once again, many Basque clubs held events to remember the victims of Gernika and to reaffirm it as a symbol of peace and rejection of wars. It is strange news that has come to light at the international conference that commemorated 400 years of the killing of Basque whalers in the West of Iceland. During the event there was a symbolic reconciliation between the Basques and Icelander end the Sheriff of the Westfjords repealed a law from 1615 that allowed killing Basques with impunity in the area. How did the Basques there receive the news? As you would imagine, amazed, as Olafur Engibertsson from the Basque-Icelandic Association told EuskalKultura.com.

Invited by Gure Esku Dago, and with the city’s support, nearly 50 seamstresses gathered on Saturday at the Palza Moreno in La Plata to participate in “Ehuntze Eguna” (Fabric Day). This is the scene repeated in other localities in Argentina and throughout the Diaspora. A large cloth with messages in favor of the right to decide will travel, in La Plata’s case, to the capital on May 10th to be part of “Buenos Aires Celebrates,” and later on to Euskal Herria to join in the “Erabakia Ehuntzen - Time to Weave our Will,” on June 21st.

At 10am today, (Boisean time, 6pm European Basque time) tickets will become available for the soccer match to be played on July 29 at Albertsons Stadium in Boise between Athletic and the Tijuana Xolos in the heart of the Jaialdi program. Tickets, also available online as well as by phone, will range between $35 and $95.

Last Saturday, with 19 votes in favor, one half of the FEVA board members were elected. Many positions are elected for a two year term. This year vicepresident of the federation was renewed among them and next year it will be the president's turn. Once the Assembly was over, Basque club representatives welcomed a delegation from the Basque Government led by Asier Vallejo and Sara Pagola. Historian Oscar Alvarez Gila also attended to present the “Memoria Bizia” project.

It was more than a hug. Last Wednesday, April 22, Xabier Irujo and Magnús Raffnson symbolized the friendship between the Basque Country and Iceland with a hug. “It was a very exciting event,” said Aizpea Goenaga, director of Etxepare Institute, to EuskalKultura.com.
