Five Basque restaurants included among the best 100 in the world and Eneko Atxa is voted as 2015 best young chef

Eneko Atxa, chef at Azurmendi in Larrabetzu (Bizkaia), chosen as the 2015 best young chef in the world by Elite Traveler magazine.

The Elite Traveler magazine that specializes in food and travel published its 2015 ranking that includes five Basque restaurants among the 100 best in the world.  Four of these are in the Basque Country while the fifth is in Mexico.  They are, with their ranking: Azurmendi (3rd), Mugaritz (28th), Biko (36), Martin Berasategui (63) and Arzak (67). The magazine has also designated Eneko Atxa, chef/owner of Azurmendi in Larrabetzu (Bizkaia) as the 2015 best young chef in the world.

“Zazpi aldiz elur,” a theater piece to the music of Mikel Laboa, come to the University of Jaume I in Castellon today

The Tanttaka Basque theater company will present “Zazpi aldiz elur (Mikel Laboa elurretan)” today in the auditorium of the Jaume I University in Castelló/Castellón.  It is a show that combines theater and music, to bring the audience on a unique tour of the works and ideas of the great Basque singer-songwriter Mikel Laboa.  The work was written by Bernardo Atxaga.

Bordeaux’s Euskal Etxea in a tribute to the Gernika Battalion that helped in the liberation of Nazi-occupied France

In 1945 a unit of Basque soldiers, the Gernika Battalion, participated in the Battle of Pointe de Grave in Aquitaine, as part of the campaign to liberate France from the Nazi occupation.  Last Saturday, on the 70th anniversary of the battle, a tribute was made to the Basque soldiers who lost their lives in the confrontation.  The Bordeaux Basque Club was also present, along with a delegation from the Basque Government led by the Lehendakari.

She says that series like CSI have served to bring light to crafts like hers, even though “in Hollywood’s way.”  Pilar Shortsleeve is a Basque in Utah, forensic scientist by profession that struggles daily with DNA and fingerprints.

Wide and various program to celebrate the 25 anniversary of Argentinan Euskaraz throught the end of the year

A large program of activities will be take place through the end of the year in Argentina to celebrate the 25th birthday of the program that trains and provides Argentinean Basque teachers to Basque clubs across the country.  FEVA especially encourages students, teachers and anyone working in the dissemination of the Basque language to participate in the events that will include talks, get-togethers and contests among others.

“Bertshow”, a bertso show to the rhythm of Bob Dylan (and many more) will tour the US this summer

“Bertshow” is a new cultural offering that will tour US Basque clubs this July and August.  The show fuses bertsos to pop and folk melodies, cultural talks and a summary of the history of Basque music in song.  The group of nine youth includes bertsolaris and musicians who will also perform at Jaialdi this summer.  They will also tour the east coast ending their tour in New York.  They are finalizing concert dates, so if you want them at your Basque club you still have some time. Hurry up!

The event that aims to provide the community with an evening outside, full of cultural expressions, celebrated its 4th edition this year in Pergamino, Argentina.  This is a new activity for the local Lagun Onak Basque Club, heavily involved in the program of activities. The Basque participant delegation introduced several aspects of the Basque cultural traditions, on and off the stage.

After celebrating its 61st anniversary, the Centro Navarro in Bolivar will elect its board at the end of May

Nearly 130 people gathered to celebrate the 61 years of the Navarran Club in Bolivar with members and friends.  The celebration included entertainment by the club choir and dancers and it lasted into the early morning hours.  After the festivities, the club is now getting ready for the election of its board of directors, as well as organize its San Fermin event.

Basques in the US and Canada are organizing to recover the stories of their elders with the “Memoria Bizia” project

The Memoria Bizia (living memory) project aims to collect, preserve and disseminate the testimonies of Basque emigrants to the US.  In order to do so, a group of volunteers has begun doing interviews with elders in their communities. Historian Pedro J. Oiarzabal has just visited several of these groups to see how the project is going and he tells us about the importance of the community itself managing and preserving its own history.
