Today is a celebration day for Basques in Necochea since it is the anniversary of 70 years of life of the Euzko Etxea in Necochea. The commemorative event will take place today at the clubhouse, even though the festivities will be on the week end: On Saturday members, friends and neighbors will participate in a birthday party at the main hall at the clubhouse. From Valencia to Havana, Korrika 19 traveled the world thanks to several Basque clubs, while the race in favor of Euskera toured the seven provinces in the Basque Country. “Without a doubt it will be an unforgettable day for our cities; a day where a goal that was craved for by previous boards of directors was achieved,” the president of Beti Aurrera Aberri Etxea, Maria del Carmen Elzaurdia said in her address. The ceremony included a ribbon cutting followed by a meal that was attended by nearly 100 people.

A little less than a month is left for another edition, the fourth, of this popular festival where Buenos Aires pays tribute to the local Basque community. And even if some are yet to be confirmed, the Laurak Bat Basque club has advanced its program to EuskalKultura.com. It includes recitals by Maral, the lagun Onak and Ixilik choirs, a Tamborrada, a master’s class on Basque gastronomy by Itziar Aguirre and Takehiro Ohno, as well as numerous booths, exhibitions and shows.

After the success of the human chain for the right to decide in 2014 that gathered more than 150,000 people, the popular movement Gure Esku Dago has now proposed a new project “Erabakia Ehuntzen – Time to Weave our Wills.” Members of the Basque Diaspora in Argentina have already joined in and now Gure Esku Dago is also inviting Basques in the US and around the world to participate. In San Francisco they have already started and soon they will do the same in New York and Boise. If you want to participate, we’ll tell you how.

Over 40 people met at the Taix French Restaurant, in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles, California to enjoy a Basque menu and sing Basque songs together. The meeting was on March 29, after more than a year since the last edition, always organized by Louise Camou, from Chino, California. “It was pretty successful –she told EuskalKultura.com−. 41 people is a good turnout and the age range was between 25 and 90, and that’s the main idea, to bring the young and the old together.”

The Ylarregui family has sold Basque Company to Julio López, a Mexican-American from Fresno, California, 35 years after its foundation, in 1980. The terms of the deal were not disclosed by none of the parties, although the founder said to EuskalKultura.com that it was sold for “a good amount of money.” Basque Company’s products will still be available at the same stores as always and co-owners Ramón and son Michael will start a new life: the former as a retired man and the latter as a personal trainer. Management discrepancies, based on generational differences, might have played a role at the time of making the decision to sell the business.

The intense rains registered lately in Chile and Peru have caused a series of landslides which have left the Peruvian region of Lima under a state of emergency, specifically the towns of Chosica and Huarochiri, and Atacama, in Chile. The Basque community in Chile and the Basque club in Lima have both started campaigns to help and support those affected.

The city of Cañuelas was once again the site of the regional Dantzari get-together that the local Basque club organized on the Day of the Basque Homeland. The event took place last weekend and unlike other years, the program also included a cultural talk by Mikel Ezkerro. The farewell lunch also included an activity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Argentinan Euskaraz, a program to train Argentinean born Basque language teachers..

This group that specializes in research, cultivation, promotion and dissemination of Basque dance and music has included various kinds of written material, graphics, visual and sounds from an exhaustive work on accordionist Bonifazio Arandia, Fasio, one of the most popular, and emblematic musicians from Bizkaia. And together with the University of the Basque Country has begun a Basque dance class called “Dantzan Fasiogaz” (dancing with Fasio).
