UCSB dedicates a panel to Basque topics as part of a symposium celebrated tomorrow and the day after

The University of California-Santa Barbara will offer a series of lectures on Basque Studies as part of the Comparative Iberian Studies Symposium being held tomorrow and the next day. Director of Euskera at the Etxepare Basque Institute, Mari Jose Olaziregi, will give a talk entitled, “Iberian Studies Within/Beyond the Peninsula: The Current Situation and Desiderata,” followed by a panel dedicated exclusively to Basque studies including presentations by academics and experts such as Diana Palenzuela, Begoña Echeverria and Unai Nafarrate.

Santa Barbara, CA.  The University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB) has taught classes on Basque language and culture for years: an area of Basque studies that is developing nicely under the direction of Dr. Viola Miglio.  Today, with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute, the center also includes a Basque language and culture lectureship.

Over the next two days, Basque studies will be featured during the Comparative Iberian Studies Symposium being celebrated at USBC, that will include a talk by the director of the Promotion of Euskera from the Etxepare Basque Institute, Mari Jose Olaziregi, entitled, “Iberian Studies Within/Beyond the Peninsula: The Current Situation and Desiderata.”

Following, as part of the “Basque Studies” panel other presenters will participate including Diana Palenzuela, Unai Nafarrate, and the Basque-Californian expert Begoña Echeverria.  Echeverria is also one of the members of the Basque musical trio Noka who will also perform a concert to close the symposium.

The program for the Basque Studies panel that will take place the day after tomorrow:

Panel IV: Basque Studies/Iberian Studies

  • 12:15pm “Of Harlots and Whores: Constructions of Female Sexuality in a Basque Old Testament” – Begoña Echeverria (UC, Riverside).
  • 12:40pm “Retos y obstáculos de la educación bilingüe en el País Vasco” – Diana Palenzuela (Etxepare Basque Institute, UCSB).
  • 1:00pm “Style and Language among Basque Youth” – Unai Nafarrate (UCSB).
