The Lehendakari starts his US trip today to culminate at NY Basque club Centennial Celebration

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has left today for the US to carry out an official trip lasting almost one-week long aimed at “publicize Euskadi in all areas of development: political, economic, social and cultural.” Urkullu is accompanied by Arantza Tapia, the Councilor of Economic Development and Competiveness, who is already in the country developing an economic agenda. The trip will conclude with the Lehendakari’s participation in the Centennial Celebration festivities at the Eusko Etxea of New York.

Vitoria-Gasteiz.  Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu will begin his first official trip to the US, today, where he will hold several meetings with various economic and business representatives as well as members of the House and Senate, world academic figures as well as the US Basque community as part of the New York Basque club Centennial Celebration.

The official events will begin tomorrow in Washington DC where he will meet with Basque companies based in the US.  Following he will hold a meeting in the Senate, with Senator Risch, followed by a meeting with congressman, Basque-Californian, John Garamendi .  In the afternoon Urkullu will meet with the director of European Affairs in the State Department, Julieta Valls Noyes and will end the day with a meeting with the board of directors of Washington’s Euskal Etxea.

On Thursday, Urkullu will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he will visit the Ingeteam factory and will meet with the mayor of the city.

In New York

On Friday, the Lehendakari will be in New York where he will hold a meeting with world academic figures at Columbia University and will participate in a round table with experts on the Basque Model of Development.  In the afternoon, Urkullu will attend a meeting with the Salomon R. Guggenheim Foundation & Museum, New York where the Deputy General of Bizkaia’s Provincial Government, Jose Luis Bilbao, will also participate to negotiate the renewal of the agreement with the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao that expires in December of 2014.

The next day, Saturday, the Lehendakari will visit the 9/11 Memorial that honors those who were victims of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers.  Following he will attend the NABO (North American Basque Organizations) meeting that will take place at the Euzko Etxea of New York.  In the afternoon the Lehendakari will attend the Centennial events at the Basque club and will attend a dance performance at the East River state Park in Brooklyn.

Centennial Gala

On Sunday, Urkullu will attend mass celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral by Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdioceses of New York, Josu Iriondo originally of Legazpi. In the afternoon the Lehendakari will attend the Euzko Etxea’s Centennial Gala where he will address the Basque community in the US.

The trip will conclude on Monday with a visit to the Delegation of Euskadi in New York.
