The oldest Basque club in the US will complete 100 years since its foundation in October of next year, and the Basque community there wants to celebrate this significant date with twelve months of activity. Already posted on the special website dedicated to the Centennial are old photos and current information on activities that the center is carrying out. Additionally, the Basque club has told EuskalKultura.com about some of the main activities that will take place.

New York, NY.  Euzko Etxea of New York (EENY) already breathes the air of the Centennial with the inauguration tomorrow of a photographic exhibit by Koitz (Luis Foncillas), journalist from Nafarroa residing in the city.  This exhibit is part of the cultural events planned by the Basque club as part of its centennial celebration that will take place throughout the year until the big day, October 13, 2013.

The Euzko Etxea is working on organizing the festivities, and even though some activities still need to be confirmed, they shared some of the main events with EuskalKultura.com.  For starters, on March 31, during the Aberri Eguna festivities, club presidents (past and present) will be honored

Conference on the Basque Presence

In October 2013, the club will host a conference on the Basque presence in New York, in collaboration with Columbia University and the University of the Basque Country, and Eusko Ikaskuntza – Society of Basque Studies. According to the club the event will be organized by historians Oscar Alvarez Gila (UPV-EHU) and Jose Moya (Barnard College, NY) and will include presenters from Basque Country universities, Columbia, Reno, NV and Boise State University along with a member of the EENY.

One of the highlights will be the celebration of the NABO Fall meeting, the federation of Basque clubs in North America.  The event will take place on October 12, with the EENY serving as the host to delegates from Basque clubs in the US and Canada.  Oskorri may be the group in charge of music entertainment and NABO’s “Bizi Emankorra” award will be presented to Anna Mari Aguirre in recognition of her lifelong commitment to the Basque culture in the US.

Basque Picnic in Manhattan

The biggest day of the Centennial will be October 13 when the Basques of New York will take their presence to the streets of the city.  The day will begin in the morning with a Romeria and a Basque picnic in Manhattan.

That evening there will be a Centennial Gala at the clubhouse where Basque and local authorities are expected to attend, like the Lehendakari or the Mayor of New York.  Dinner entertainment will be provided by the Urki Dantza Taldea from Andoain (Gipuzkoa), and the Basque group from California, Noka.
