Headquartered in Ermua, Basque Country the four members of the extreme metal band Cerebral Effusion −Kosme, bass and vox; Pe, guitars; Jabo, guitars; and Eihar, drums− are getting ready for their upcoming US tour, to start on June 13. There will be 13 shows in 13 days, the first stop being to headline the Las Vegas Deathfest: “It’s going to be a very special concert for us,” said drummer Eihar Unamuno to EuskalKultura.com.

The former president of Uruguay, one of the most charismatic politicians and well-loved around the world in recent times, is now in the Basque Country visiting his roots, along with his wife, Senator Lucia Topolansky. Mujica is taking advantage of his brief visit, in which he rejected all fanfare, to get to know the Basque culture better. He stressed the “sharp personality,” of the Basques. “There are all kinds of political tendencies,” he laughed before pointing out the “flags of the municipalities are small" but that the Basque one "was big.”

Described by its maker as “a road film, a trip through Basque clubs and municipal parks, plazas and school where there are or have been saplings planted,” the documentary is a personal experience for director Javier Barrio that delves into history and the present of the saplings of the Tree of Gernika in Argentina. After trying to debut the film in Chascomus, Vasco Viejo will be shown for the first time on May 29th at Euzkal Etxea in San Nicolas.

Musician, composer and arranger, Sabin Bikandi, founder of the Aiko Taldea, is one the winners at the 2015 Max Performing Arts Awards that were presented yesterday at a gala in Barcelona. Bikandi won the award for best musical composition for a stage show for the score of “Gelajauziak,” a work performed by the Kukai Dance Company that was also awarded as best group. Alain Maya, Eneko Gil, Ibon Huarte, Jon Maya and Urko Mitxelena are Kukai on stage. Both award winners are well-known in the Diaspora in countries like Argentina and the US. Zorionak!

The young Basque composer and musician from Argentina, Juan Iñaki (Cordoba, 1986) has an “unpronounceable” last name in his country: Berecibar. His artistic name is a testament to his Basque roots but hardly any of his fans attending his concert in Arrasate, a few days ago, knew that his last name comes from the farm of Salturri in Mietzerreka, in Arrasate-Mondragon. The Berezibars (Basque spelling), celebrated a reunion for Juan Iñaki’s visit and his father Raul. The article was published in last Saturday’s El Diario Vasco.

Yesterday’s Official Bulletin of the Basque Country included the “Resolution of May 4 from the Director of the Basque Community Abroad in regards to grants to Basque clubs for individuals in extreme need and healthcare.” The article provides access and links to the name lists. Recipients belong to the following countries: Argentina, Chile. Colombia, Cuba, uruguay and Venezuela.

In Brazil, a delegation from the Basque Club in Rio Grande do Sul, led by president Ana Luiza Panyagua Etchalus, visited the Gaucho Institute of Tradition and Folklore in Porto Alegre. They were welcomed by president, Vinicius Brum along with other board members. While there, they discussed the need to research and recuperate the Basque contribution to the formation of the gaucho culture in the area, among other topics.

Salt Lake City will celebrate this weekend -- May 15, 16 and 17 -- the 30th anniversary of this popular gathering. The Living Traditions festival has been organized every year by the local Arts Council and it had since the begining the presence and contribution of the Utah Basque Club and its dance group Utahko Triskalariak.
