The Basque couple formed by Paco Casteig and Bego Illarramendi manage the “Flavors of Paco and Bego” restaurant in Queretaro, Mexico. They are experts in Paella and have won several competitions of this kind. Now they are aiming at reactivating the local Basque community, that used to get together at the Arrano Beltza (Black Eagle), in nearby Celaya. “We have the idea to get together once a month in our restaurant and in doing so avoiding extra costs like rent.”

Municipal and Foral elections were held yesterday in the Basque Country – municipal and autonomous all over Spain – with important changes, particularly in Navarre. After dozens years of hegemony, the UPN in the Provincial Government, and according to what was said during the campaign, it seems that a new era is beginning when looking at the numbers of the alternative government that can be led by Uxue Barkos from Geroa Bai (9 seats) with the support of EH Bildu (8), Podemos (7) and Izquierda-Ezkerra (2), with the absolute majority of 26 seats.

After its 11th edition, the Basque literature festival organbized by Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea is very happy with the result of the past few days. “We had many activities, the quality was better and very well-received. There were more attendees than ever,” Ekaitz Garate, club cultural technician told EuskalKultura.com. Among the most notable were the literary talks between writers Bernardo Atxaga and Galician Manuel Rivals, and the audiovisual reading of the comic Black is Beltza by Fermin Muguruza.

“Palabra de Vasco” (Word of a Basque) will return to the airwaves on June 3, on Wednesdays at 5pm with Laura Nobile. With a similar structure to that of previous years, the central theme will be the Basque culture and community news. The novelty, however, will be its new time. “We had to make the change because of the number of listeners from the Basque Country, Nobile explained to EuskalKultura.com.

Eight years after the death of Potxolo Loyola, the Basque club in Arrecifes paid tribute to the Basque club txistualris with an event that included a ceremony at the cemetery’s gathering room and the annual celebration of the Day of the Txistulari also at the clubhouse.

At the age of 27, he has been to the Basque Country three times, but he was born and was raised in a city in Argentina, Necochea which is Basque to its name. Marcial Agostini Zubillaga grew up linked to the Euzko Etxea in his hometown and participated for years in the youth program “Hator Hona.” He is learning Basque and feels that it is important for youth in the clubs to get to know their peers in the Basque Country; that is what the “Hator Hona” program is for.

The Basque club in Maipu celebrated its birthday with lunch attended by 70 people. At the event, and thanks to a video made by club members, everyone who founded, promoted and strived to keep the club alive over the last four decades were also present at the celebration. The book Winnipeg, Testimonies of an Exile was presented recently at the Lope de Vega Theater in Santiago, Chile at an event organized by the Basque club Colectividad Vasca de Chile. The author, Julio Galvez Barraza, and his editor, Jaime Ferrer Mir, gave an emotional and interesting talk on the voyage of the ship that brought 2,000 exiles from the Spanish Civil War to Chile in 1939.

A cultural exchange between the Basque Country and Italy will take a group of young Basque musicians and dantzaris to Rimini tomorrow, where they are the guests of honor at the La Borgata che danza festival dedicate to the popular music and dance. Participants are youth from popular music schools in Hernani and Oiartzun (Gipuzkoa), along with dantzaris from Leinua Konpainia from Hiriburu, Milafranga and Mugerre (Lapurdi).
