The Basque Culture conference that is organized annually by the Basque University in Buenos Aires (UVBA) at the Congressional Library of the Nation is celebrating its fourth edition this year. The event will be held from August 21-September 2 and will provide a program of workshops and Basque films. At the same time, there will also be an art exhibit so organizers also invite artists to present their work. The UVBA will accept pieces through June 30.

The song is on Youtube and has already received more than 3,000 hits. Its composers, Sebastian Borro and Matias Fernandez, members of the Navarran community in Argentina, have received a lot of messages of congratulations as well as some with some harsh criticism. “It is clear that the idea is not to do something serious; we did it in our spare time and if the people wants to sing, awesome.” The proposal crossed borders and the video has already been included in the virtual version of Navarre’s Diario de Noticias.

The SOAS Center at the University of London is putting an end to the Endangered Languages Week 2015 with a day entirely dedicated to Euskera. The program of the day includes various proposals, like the screening of the documentary Euskara Jendea, talks on bertsolaritza and current initiatives to promote Euskera, as well as a Basque dance workshop. All of these are open to the public.

Writer Harkaitz Cano is currently in Holland where he has been participating, since last Tuesday in the 46th Poetry International Festival in Rotterdam. The event will conclude this Saturday and among other activities, Cano will share his poetry with a small group on the roof of the Municipal Theater in Rotterdam, as part of the “Rooftop Poetry” section.

Born in Gernika, raised in Deusto, he got his law degree at the University of Deusto. Life took him to Germany where he has lived now for almost 10 years. Father of two children born in Berlin, last Saturday he participated in the first Bertso-Afaria in the German capital organized by the Berlin Basque Club, with Bertsolaris Jon Maia and Alaia Martin that came all the way from the Basque Country.

Invited by the Municipal Directorate for Tourism in Rauch, and the Commission for the Recuperation of the Castillo San Francisco, Gure Txokoa organized a Basque exhibit in the historic castle located in the town of Egaña area, province of Buenos Aires. The event ran for two weekends and provided the public with photos, traditional costumes, and information on Euskal Herria.

Herri Urrats, the festival in support of Ikastolas in Iparralde, made it to Paris on May 30, thanks to the Basque club there. Pariseko Eskual Etxea organized a program full of activities like games, dance, food and a concert. The money raised will go to support Seaska, the association of Ikastolas in Iparralde. This weekend there will be more Basque atmosphere, thanks to the big Basque Celebration (Euskal Jaia) that will take place at the fronton Txikito de Cambo.

The Buenos Aires Euskaltegi extends a double invitation for this Saturday. At 6:30 it will open its doors to anyone who wants to watch the first match of the Argentine Selection in the Copa America in koadrilla. At 8:30pm, after the game, the Triki-Poteo will begin, as in prior editions it will take place in the San Telmo neighborhood to the rhythm of trikis, panderos and albokas.

Born in Pamplona and immigrated to Argentina at the age of 15, Guillermo Larregui traveled kilometers on foot with a wagon that weighed 100 kilograms and was known as “El Vasco de la Carretilla,” (the Basque with the wagon). Another Basque-Argentine, Roberto Arizmendi, did the documentary that has traveled over the past few days to Baiona and Uztaritze (Iparralde) and will be shown tomorrow in Vitoria-Gasteiz and on Saturday in Iruña-Pamplona.

Last Saturday the Berlin Basque club held a crowded Bertso-Bazkari that took place at the Basque restaurant, On Egin. The venue was packed with nearly 50 people hoping to hear Jon Maia and Alaia Martin. “There were as many Basques as Germans, and the majority of Germans were Basque language students. But was also very interesting for Basque kids born here, being the first time that they have seen a Bertso Bazkari live,” Ainhoa Añorga, club president, told EuskalKultura.com.
