The book Amerikanuak. Basques in the New World, by Jon Bilbao and William Douglass, is forty years old.  It is a complete study of the history of the Basques outside the Basque Country, and has had great influence in the areas of Diaspora studies.  This is why a group of universities, including the Center for Basque Studies in Reno, has launched “1975 – the Year of Amerikanuak – 2015. Basque Studies in a Global World,” with an extensive series of talks and activities.

The exhibition celebrating 25 years of Euskera in Argentina will be available to Basque clubs by mid-July

The exhibit is comprised of 19 panels through which one can explore the past and present of the language of the Basques, above all its presence in Argentina starting with the Argentinan Euskaraz program.  The Delegation of Euskadi invites Basque clubs to organize exhibits outside the purview of their communities to reach a larger and more varied audience.

The Jose C. Paz Basque club turned 19 and celebrated, as usual, with a gigantic paella for members, and friends at the Jose Altube Artisans Club.  However, the food wasn’t the main attraction of the day with two dantzaris from Toki Eder performing their version of Agurra.

Last Saturday, June 20th, the Brussels Basque club celebrated an evening of Basque song at its new clubhouse.  The night was very special, from the nerves and excitement of members of the Basque club choir, Txalaparta who performed for an audience for the first time.  Along with them, was a choir from Euskal Herria the Ugaoko Sarea Abesbatza.

The Pehuajo Etxe Alai Basque club, in the interior of the province of Buenos Aires, held elections.  Alejandro Maggio Curutchet will lead the board of directors that will run the club’s activities during the present term, along with Liliana Ester Ustarroz, vice-president; Maria del Carmen Bevliacqua Escudero, Secretary; and Maria Elisa Orozo as treasurer, among other members.

Wishes from the Basque Diaspora were present at the Gure Esku Dago Events in the Basque Country

The Gure Esku Dago dyed in the colors and the excitement of the Plaza of the Virgin Blanca in Gasteiz

Tens of thousands of people supported the “Erabakia Ehuntzen” initiative of Gure Esku Dago in favor of the right to decide the future of Euskal Herria.  In a day of festivities and protests with activities in Baiona, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Anoeta (Donostia), San Mames (Bilbao) and the Zezen-Plaza in Iruña-Pamplona, the Diaspora was also present with hundreds of small scraps of fabric sent with wishes written for the future of Euskal Herria.

Kristie Onaindia: “I wanted to transmit the children that the Basque Club is an extended family"

At this year’s Bakersfield Picnic, a good part of the program booklet was reserved to Kristie Onaindia (Bakersfield, 1975). Basque dance instructor for years, this course has been her last one. Louis Iturriria, president of Kern County Basque Club, said EuskalKultura.com that “she’s done an amazing job.” Kristie agreed to share her memories and answer some questions.

Pablo Pavesa, president of the Guillermo Larregui Basque club was in charge of giving the talk to the second grade class

Invited by the second grade at the local Catholic School, Pablo Pavesa and Anibal Izurieta, from the Guillermo Larregui Basque club of Chacabuco visited the students to give them a class on Basque culture.  After the talk, the children joined in the dance of the group with some of their classmates who belong to the Basque club dance group.

Beñat Ibarra and A Basq Kitchen: A new culinary window to Euskal Herria at Redondo Beach’s waterfront

Today, 7-9pm, is going to be the Grand Opening party of the newest Basque restaurant in California: A Basq Kitchen−the latest endeavor by the chef Beñat Ibarra (Baiona, 1956). Tickets are already sold-out, there’s no doubt it’s going to be a successful coming out, and the owner is exultant: “I’m very excited, everything’s going to go well,” said he to EuskalKultura.com. Unlimited food and drink on the Redondo Beach Pier is what they advertise. “What a great way to spend Friday night!”

Talks on gender violence and an excursion by Gure Txoko in Valladolid, also getting ready for San Juan

The Gure Txoko Basque club in Valladolid has carried out various activities over the last few weeks, including a talk on gender violence and an excursion to Burgos accompanied by the club’s choir who performed at the Cathedral.  Now, the club is preparing the next big event, the traditional meal for San Juan.
