Even though the real race that takes place in the Basque Country without stop for ten days will begin next Thursday, this year Basques in Boise will take the lead and hold their Korrika this Saturday. The fuse has been lit, and next weekend the race will also arrive in many other places in the Diaspora like Buenos Aires, Madrid, Barcelona, Toulouse, Montevideo, Belfast, Brno, Geneva…and many more.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  Korrika 18 is just about to start--at least in the Diaspora, that is--jumpstarting this year’s race in favor of AEK euskaltegis that takes place in the Basque Country from March 14-24.  The international version will start this Saturday, March 9, in Boise, thanks to the Euzkaldunak Basque club.

It will be at 10am, with a symbolic race that will gather a large number of Basques and Basque students in Idaho’s capital.  Registration will begin 9:30; there will also be live music and Basque food (talos made by Jesus Alcelay).

Madrid and Barcelona

Korrika will go to Madrid next Saturday, March 16, thanks to the Euskal Etxea, the UCM and UNED.  This year, the race will begin at 10:30 at the Complutense University (College of Philology, Bldg. A) will pass by the Iberian Languages Department (Eloy Gonzalo, 3) and around 12:30 will arrive at the Basque club where the children can join in.  The day will end with a dance and Basque music, and a light meal on the fourth floor.

Barcelona’s Basque club has organized a complete program of events on the same day to welcome Korrika (Korricursa, as they say).  The day will begin with breakfast at the clubhouse; kids’ games; then the race and entertainment by Can Batlló; popular comedy, songs, games and drinks through the streets of Sants and will end with concerts by Naraina, Itziarren Semeak and Ingo Aldeu.

Buenos Aires, Toulouse, Montevideo

A exhibit in Lizarrenea (Mexico 1880) will open in Buenos Aries on Saturday, as part of the Cultural Korrika.  It includes paintings by Claudia Giaccobe, as part of the series entitled “Basque Women.”  The day will continue with a performance by the Ekin Dantzari Taldea and dinner organized by the Eusketxe, Eusko Kultur Etxea.

Toulouse, France is also holding an event on Saturday, the 16th, organized by a group of euskaltzales that will begin at 4pm from the Capitol.  In Montevideo, Uruguay, on the same day, they will start at 10:00 at the Rambla.

Berlín, London and Necochea

Berlin’s Basque club will celebrate the race again this year on March 23, along with other events, as part of Korrika.  Runners should meet at 12:00 at Ostbahnhof.  On the same day, Korrika will also arrive in London where the London Basque society has organized a complete program to accompany the race--kalejira, trikitixa, and an all-day party.  This will be at 179 Haggerston Road.

Coming back to Argentina, one of the classic Korrikas will take place at Necochea’s Basque club on March 30, pushed back to coincide with Aberri Eguna celebrations.  The race will begin at 11:00 followed by dinner and a dance at the clubhouse that evening.  The next day, March 31, they will celebrate Aberri Eguna.

We will be adding more events to the agenda over the next few days.  If you still don’t see yours, let us know at: info@euskalkultura.com.
